hopefully they don't go away for too long this time- this talk of their next album being a high concept double album has perked my interest. sounds like the type of album that could be incredible or a total disaster (as is the case with most double albums)

Yeah, my advice to bands who want to do a double album would be this-

- write double album

- record double album

- just before you release double album, pick the best 12 tracks and scrap the rest

- release single album

Lots of talk about the headliners, but what about the undercard ?? For me, it's these bands that make the festival - unless it's a stunner like Rammstein.

My views - not based on a lot, other than wishlists

Terrorvision - reformed and back touring next year. Fully expect them to be there

Therapy - would love to see these again. Soni got them for the Troublegum tour didn't they, but no reason why they couldn't play a similar set at DL

Skunk Anansie - brilliant live band - perfect for a saturday afternoon

ZZ Top - just cause they're on my list of bands to see

Alice Cooper - people seem to think he'll be playing, and I'd be happy with that.

Shinedown - they'll have a new album out, won't they ?

Tracer - awesome Aussie band, new album out now. Hopefully they'll be doing festivals next summer

What do others think ?

Love Skunk Anansie. They're due a return and are about to release an album. ZZ Top are on my must see list. Fingers crossed for them. Shinedown have lost it big time. Got some great songs but last time I saw them they played mincy songs with boke worthy atmospheric music between each song whilst they adjusted their make up and down trouser socks. They can lose that shit or do one.

or, if they're REALLY insistent on releasing a double album

- write quadruple album

- record quadruple album

- just before you release double album, pick the 24 best tracks and scrap the rest

- release double album album

although what with almost every band these days claiming to have written 50+ songs and then still releasing a garbage single album, maybe this plan wouldn't work. just fingers crossed Slipknot don't decide to do one heavy disc and one soft disc, 'cause i know which of those would only get one listen ever

It's already out, which I'm guessing says a lot about how it did but I haven't checked to see if it charted over here.

EDIT: Apparently it charted at number 13 so not too bad.

What the artist thinks are the best 12 tracks, and what you think are the best 12 tracks, and what the next person thinks are the best 12 tracks probably vary quite a lot. I'm sure you could probably name many more good double/triple albums than bad ones anyway.

there are obviously the classics (White Album, Mellon Colline & The Infinite Sadness, Sign 'O The Times etc) but far too often do you get bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Biffy Clyro - bands who struggle to put together a decent single disc - making double albums. there are probably far more bad ones, we just don't remember them because they're so forgettably shite. reckon Slipknot would give it a good go, but it's hardly going to be their best/a classic, is it?*

No I would disagree, I think that's just a case of RHCP and Biffy Clyro making bad albums. Pretty much any double album (including the ones you've listed as classics) come in for stick for being 'too long' and 'full of filler' for an average listener but there are a lot of bloody great ones including some of the greatest albums of all time so I really wouldn't warn bands off doing those albums all together because they could make a Stadium Arcadium sized flop.

I don't like or listen to Slipknot but with them already being of an established reputation then I don't think there'd be anything wrong with doing a double album at this point. Metal albums are usually pretty long anyway so sticking another half hour on their normal duration wouldn't be a whole lot.

Double albums should be at least half live. The only good double albums have been live ones.

Those are usually deluxe editions of albums rather than intended double albums, aren't they? Either way, does anyone listen to an album and then think "I would love to instantly hear these songs again in demo form or in a live setting"?

Naw, Bands used to bring out proper double live albums. I am talking a long time ago though, DVDs kinda replaced them. Muse did Hullabaloo which had the (very good) live CD2 but most just add extra tracks nowadays as you said. I agree with the rest though, if it's not a live double album, it should be a single album. And no, demos and live versions should not be on the same album as the released track. Obscure EPs and B sides for the real geeks is where they should be :)

Hes sticking to his guns, I admire it to be fair hahaha

I'm honestly just clinging onto hope that whatever you and lucky know might turn out to be wrong because I want BMTH to headline so much

Anyway, I came on to say that I saw Bullet in Lincoln tonight and they were immense. Much better than when I saw them at R&L in 2012, and whoever says Matt Tuck can't scream anymore is a liar. He sounded incredible tonight. That being said, I think that they have the songs, the crowd backing and the capability to be an outstanding headliner at Download... on the second stage. That should be their spot imo. They just haven't got the hype to be Main Stage headliners now. That fourth album really was duff and it has cost them.

Songs from their new album sounded really good tonight though. And they played Hand Of Blood :D :D best pit of the night by far!

I dunno, Trivium headlined second stage the other year, yeah it was cus LOG pulled out before being announced, but they still ended up getting the slot.

You look at second stage headliners and they're on a par with 3rd or 4th on main. So I think thats a perfectly fine slot for Bullet. Now if you're whacking them back in a sub on main slot they don't deserve that, especially when they still got a sub slot in 2013 but Korn dropped to 3rd down, you can't tell me that now BMTH can still hold their value as a sub.

I do wonder though, if they were a US act would things be different?
