Football 2015/16

Being captain isn't the important part, but every team needs a leader or 2 - it doesn't matter if they are captain or not.

Just normally its natural for 'the leader' to be made captain. there are of course examples of where this isn't the case. The most recently glaring example I can remember is Argentina at the World Cup, I believe Messi was captain, but Mascherano was the their leader.

Yep. Totally agree. A captain should be a leader. I hate seeing players getting the armband simply because they are seen as the "best player", but have no natural ability/personality to lead

As an arsenal fan, personally I see this as being as big of an issue as any for our lack of success in the Premier league over the past 10 years. We haven't had a proper leader since Vieira. We went through a period where we would shove the armband onto the player that we hoped wouldn't want to leave at the end of that season (Henry, Fabregas, Van Persie) - which clearly had no effect whatsoever.

There's more than one way to be a good captain surely, it's not all about who can shout the loudest.

Undoubtedly. Its just as much about what you say than how loud you are saying it. You could be one of the quieter players on the pitch and still be a good leader.

The captain of my Sunday league team doesn't say a lot, but he leads by example and he just has that air of authority. He must be about 5ft 10 but when he's on the pitch it seems like he is 6ft 5.

Because he knows and loves the club, his passion would rub off on the players around him. His links with the fans (himself being one) will help him realise when the team are not performing to the standards required, he also strikes me as a bigger character than many in terms of dressing room stature (I don't know the guy so I may be wrong here), and I think if the players around him know that he is a fan favourite they are more likely to respect his position as captain.

It also helps that he must be the longest serving player, and a good player at that.

Utter bunkum. We're dangerously close to the "England need and English manager to give them some of the Three Lions passion" bollocks, or John Terry being declared a great leader because he dives onto the floor to get his head in the way of a shot going along the ground.

If a Premier League team is full of players that need the crowd to tell them when they aren't performing to the required standard or who respect a player based on how popular they are with the fans then they have bigger problems than who their captain is.

The only reason to take the fans into consideration when appointing a captain is to keep the mouth-breathing 'true' fans happy because they think the team needs more passion, and a local or long-serving player can give them that. In reality a captain needs to have good relationship with the manager, be intelligent enough to recognise tactical or personal issues and respond to them and to be respected enough that players respond to those responses. None of those have anything to do with the fans of the club.

Daniel Levy met his match when it comes to negotiations.. Well done JP..

Up to Saido now, mope and waste his talent or get stuck in, have another good season and make clubs bid for him next season..

Even taking away my obvious bias, it's nice to see bigger clubs being told to ram it**

**might not be saying that if he does an Odemwingie and whinges about

Some stones on him to knock back those big cash bids! ;)

Fair fucks to em! It would be great to see the money told to jump for once. But the window aint closed yet. Everyone has their price do they not?

I guess they do, tho this is perhaps a case where the buyer won't pay the price wanted.

All the end of season talk was about Sterling and what a stupidly high price that would be for a kid.

The bidding for Stones has already gone waaay past what anyone might have predicted in May and Everton have stood firm, even to the extent of formally rejecting a transfer request from Stones, and still having confidence in him to play him. They can get another season from him, and are unlikely to end up with a lower price next summer and might do even better.

Do Chelsea have another even-higher bid in them? There's certainly the suggestion that they've started looking elsewhere,

Stones however may feel a lot of pressure and emotion this season if he stays. Reports of him being "harassed" at a service station the other night with Naismith in tow by a bunch of "fans" and it ending up with Stones crying are not a good sign for the lad

Some people can be horrible c**ts thinking this game is that important. Idiots

I'd be interested to know to what level you played football?

Your response strikes me that you see premier league players as robots that all behave and think the same way, characteristics such as passion, dedication and commitment are the sort of things that players that need someone to look up to within a squad are drawn to. No, John terry diving on the ground and putting his head in does not automatically make him a good leader, but it is the impression these things have on lesser players around the dressing room that contribute to him having the most respect and therefore easier for him to lead.

I dunno, I'm an Everton fan and I think we should sell him. He's at the perfect point between demonstrated ability and perceived potential to maximise his value. Is he the difference to us between 11th place and 5th place? No. He hasn't ever had a lengthy run in the team and I doubt one this season for a mid-table team with no European competition will improve his asking price to much more than the current £35mil, and as a player who has already suffered patches of bad form and injury it's more likely that his value goes down rather than up. Having watched him play many times I think there's a far greater risk to him being exposed as just OK or injury-prone than the next John Terry. We should cash out while stupid money is on the table, the only downside is our dismal alternative options at the position.

It's great to say 'stick it to the big boys' but only if that benefits us, three £12mil players would be of more benefit to us than John Stones right now. The only way it would make sense is if Kenwright and Martinez think he's going to be one of the nation's top defenders and stay at Everton for the next ten years, neither of which are exactly guaranteed.
