Getting on and off site? Advice needed please

Hi, can anyone give me any advice for getting in and out of the site over the weekend? I've emailed the KC team but haven't really had a straight answer and I think it might be too late to apply for an official pass out and not sure if we need one anyway.  Due to a worsening physical condition, camping is no longer a possibility, so we booked into a guest house just a couple of miles away. We've bought full weekend camping and a car parking ticket but intended leaving the car either at the guest house or at the festival site for the duration and hoped to get a taxi to and from site each day/night. We were under the impression that an official 'pass out' would only be needed for for those who needed to get on and off site with a vehicle as understand this is an inconvenience and it would need to prearranged but has anyone had any experience or problems getting in and out on foot with just a weekend wristband?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi, thanks for the reply. We're staying at a place called Clifton, apparently only about 4-5 miles away. Will give the place a ring to see if they can give us some advice on taxi's but just wanted to check first that it won't be a problem getting in and out on foot. Thanks again.

It's a dark fast road (A6) from the festival site to Clifton with next to no footpath...unfortunately I wouldn't risk the walk.

Any more local intel Johnny on how safe it would be?

I dont know if you will get a taxi to come 7 miles from penrith and take you 2.8 miles to clifton .

If your going to walk remember to face the traffic and get on the verge when car is coming , or rearrange your place of stay to the Punchbowl askham its a much safer quicker walk tbh.

Hi, thanks again for the advice, didn't realise it was such a bad road and was only judging it by distance. Would you suggest that staying anywhere in Askham to be a better idea and how far/long do you think the walk would be and do you know if we'd be able to get a taxi from there any easier. Sorry for all the questions but you obviously know you're stuff and will be a great help. Thanks again in advance

I stayed at the Punchbowl in 2013...it's a very safe route as there are minimal cars heading along the minor road that runs between Askham and the festival site (you can go 'off road' but I would only recommend that during daylight to get to the festival).

Takes about 25 mins to walk to the Punchbowl, with 95% being downhill (the only uphill bit is the last 200 yards to the pub)...as you'll have probably worked out, it means the majority of the walk to the festival site is uphill...you build up a decent sweat!

If you are going to be walking its best to stay at Askham , if you don't mind paying for taxi then what you need to do is talk to penrith taxi firms , they will be able to say if they are doing the festival , some taxis choose no to especially if it's muddy .

Then you can talk to them and fit in getting back at night when they are at lowther .

What you need to remember is penrith is a town of 15,000 people and it's not like a city and things just don't happen like in other places .

Thanks Mick, good to know that someones done the same before without a problem and good to know what to expect. Just managed to get booked in, same price as the other place which we didn't have to pay a cancelation fee on, so alls good.

Thanks for the link Lochlands, spoke to the lady at the punchbowl who reckons it won't be a problem getting a taxi but if it is, we'll just have to walk and make an adventure of it! and I'm a cumbrian myself but the other end but prob got a good idea of the way things work up there. Thanks again, can start to look forward to it now.

...spoke to the lady at the punchbowl who reckons it won't be a problem getting a taxi...

Get your walking boots out! lol

Put yourself in here shoes (no pun intended lol), would you say that if someone was thinking about booking a room and taxi availability tipped the balance?

It's a nice walk to build up a thirst lol

  • 2 weeks later...

you need to be careful about this - I booked accommodation as KC has a rain reputation even worse than Glastonbury hence I booked accommodation in Penrith. I then checked the small print on the website and they said that passouts are not readily given. I contacted KC directly and they put my name down on a list of people who can get pass-outs and they said on this occasion this wasn't a problem.

All incredibly childish - so you might have to check with them first to be on the safe side.
