Quiet Camping

Hello everyone,

Been browsing a while, but decided to dig out my old password and say hello as it's my first Kendal Calling.

So hello!!

I have a question about quiet camping, basically how quiet is quiet?

There's 3 of us in our mid 30's coming, we'll probably still be out drinking until the bars close but would rather sit back and chat at the tent than full on party, would people not like us sitting talking late?

Also am I right in thinking the bars are open until 3am?

Thanks

I was in the outer of the quiet camp last time I went and didn't feel as if people were expecting silence at all...

We stayed up until early hours... Laughing, joking etc... As were others.

I think it's just the case of not taking the piss... Normal camp will be much of the same but with added sing songs, boom boxes, guitars and screaming teenagers ;)

Is there much theft from tents at kendal - staying in a tent on my own on thursday night for the first time and a bit worried - heard loads of horror stories from glasto

I wont have much on me (as i am moving to campervan field on friday) but the thought of someone getting into my tent when i am alone really scares me.

I don't think you can ever predict theft, you can certainly try and prevent it though.  I was one of those people who heard of thefts and thought that will NEVER happen to me, I'd wake up, I'd hear something or sense someone was there.  Found that I was horribly wrong and we got cleaned out whilst I had two young kids alseep in the tent with me (THIS WASN'T AT KC I MUST ADD!!!), to this day I don't know how the fcuk 'they' managed it.

Don't take anything you don't want to lose, I haven't taken my camera to any fests this year and found it hasn't killed me.......or use a lock up - Do we have lock ups this year?  This wont stop someone coming in but will stop them getting away with your stuff.

and people - if someone tries to enter your tent in the night and you are aware of it then please make as much noise as possible - we found the next morning that 2 separate people found a guy in their tent during the night and he had scarpered saying wrong tent and they ''thought nothing of it''.

Emperors have a 24hr security number, I put that in my phone when I got there last year, never needed it but at least you can contact someone asap if something does happen.

Security seemed a lot more noticeable in most fields last year and in campervan field they were handing out bits of paper with the telephone number of security for that field. I was stopped a few times on late night toilet trips.

Kendals had its share of thefts in the past, as usual most thefts happen on the 1st night when people have the most money on them and they're more likely to be drunk after celebrating being there. Best thing to do is to put anything valuable at the bottom of your sleeping bag if there are no lock ups and if you go out of the tent take the valuables with you.

If you're in emperors or somewhere close to your car I'd suggest leaving some stuff in there hidden as well. If you're taking £500 to the festival take what you need for the day out of the car and leave the rest hidden, a 5 minute morning trip to the car is better than losing everything.

Most professional tent thieves won't be looking to steal your crate of Stella, they want cash or stuff they can sell on like phones, cameras and Ipads etc. A few years ago I remember a whole batch of stuff being stolen on the 1st night and the phones where traced to somewhere in Manchester by the Saturday morning. They steal on night 1 and normally one of their group leaves with the haul.

I've been to kendal for the last 5 years and from what I remember all the thefts have been on the first night as Ram says. My advice is just use common sense i.e. dont leave valuables lying around, dont keep everything in one bag (as it makes an ideal swag bag), keep valuables either in a secure place or actually on you (I sleep in shorts with pockets and keep my phone/wallet on me. A messy tent is a nightmare for theives as they dont want to be scrambling around searching through peoples underwear for valuables, they want to be in and out. On the whole in the past KC hasn't really been a big target for theives compared to bigger festivals, although that could change this year with the extra attendance.

I got collared a good few times on the way back to the tent and nipping out for the loo etc, they were pretty sound blokes (in the main), but it was a lot better in 2014 for visibility
