Al in Mayo
I just thought I would ask this on here as well as emailing KC about it. While having a wander on Monday morning we came across a member of the clean up crew slashing tents, which I presume he had deemed abandoned, with a metal stick. I was fairly shocked at this and did not approach him to ask why but can only assume it was a way of identifying tents which can be cleared up later by other crew members. I know the amount of abandoned stuff at festivals is a massive problem (and part of a far greater issue about price of gear/lack of care for the environment/disposable society etc) but surely a more creative or charitable solution could be found rather than wanton destruction of perfectly good tents? ramragon
We saw someone doing a similar thing, collapsing tents which were obviously abandoned as we left at around 1pm. They had a medical pack on their back, I just assumed however grim it sounds that they might be looking to see if their were any bodies in the tents. Their was a sign on the entry points to take everything away with you and that it wasn't true that anything left was just given to charity. To be honest, the place looked an utter disgrace when we left.
SloopJohnB
Really pisses me off the state some people leave festivals in. There was 16 in our camp and we left nothing!
Al in Mayo
Just got this reply from KC.... Thank you for your email. Great to hear that you had a good time and thank you for joining us in our 10th birthday celebrations. We do have a team that comes on and takes some of the tents to charity, due to the nature of how some of the tents are left a lot of these cannot be recycled. I will look into your comments and pass onto the management team. I guess that explains why they were slashing some tents-they were presumably unsuitable. Delighted to hear some tents etc ARE recycled
viberunner
A lot of the tents at KC can be recycled, I know because I've taken a few and other festivals taken QUITE a few and sold them on eBay. The trouble is they're against a self-imposed deadline. They cannot assess the condition and pack a field full of tents in a quick enough time. It's all utterly absurd. stuwilky
The problem with most of these things is that tents are practically worthless and certainly have limited sell on value, many people will simply buy a cheap "festival kit" for £80 between 4 folk and include it in the price of their festival ticket. The ridiculous "give them to charity" argument that many folk use makes me chuckle - yes mate, a kid in africa needs your £15 pop up...... We recycle loads of stuff from festivals - havnt bought a camp chair in years and the odd pop up for the kids etc.
Comfy Bean
Aye, a few of our chairs etc were left behind by folk over the years. Waste not want not We go to Kelburn Garden Party and they charge everyone a deposit with the wristband and hand you a bag. At the end of the fest you take the bag back full of your rubbish and they give you your cash back and snip the wee tree symbol off the end of your wristband. It`s just a small fest ( approx 2000 ) but there is never any shit left. I appreciate that some folk still wouldn`t bother their arse but every little helps etc.

Al in Mayo
Last year at KC I 'salvaged' 24 cans of Carlsburg, 12 Magners and 12 Coors....all full boxes....all abandoned!!! My lads tatted a tent, a stool, a sleeping mat, 5 full cans of gas for cookers 8 cans of magners and 35 cans of Carlsberg and could have brought twice as much again away with us!
