Eagles of Death Metal playing Germany 16 August and Reading/Leeds at the end of the month. 100% sure for Pukkelpop.

I can see Chokri giving them a headliner or subhealiner status, as he does every year with a medium size band in order to save money... I only hope that if he does it, he won't mention anything related to a tribute to the victims or whatever...

Think the Chems and Pendulum are both good shouts, although it's hard to gauge just now popular the latter will be in terms of placement (definitely Dance Hall or Marquee headliners but Main Stage might depend on where they feature at other festivals this summer).

Been looking at some of the other euro fests around the same time and there's a few names popping up. M83, Sia and Foals (if RW don't get them first) are all likely but also fancy Hercules and Love Affair, Stormzy, Paul Kalkbrenner and Kolsch (live) to make an appearance.

Would love New Order to headline the Marquee one night and think there's a chance that might happen. Also put Maceo Plex and Bicep on my wishlist so fingers crossed they make the final cut!

  • 4 weeks later...

Deep Purple announced for Suikrerrock, so another headliner that we can rule out.

At his moment, all headliners that have been announced for August european festivals have another beligian date (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rammstein, Sigur Ros and Deep Purple) but Limp Bizkit

Is Foals big enough in Belgium to headline a festival like PKP? If Bastille and Alt-J did it, can Foals or The 1975, do it?

I doubt it. Compared to 2015's headliners, Foals and The 1975 are definitely playing in a lower league in Belgium (less airplay, struggling to sell out mid-scale venues, etc). And based on the reactions and slow ticket sales of last year, I'd say that Bastille/Alt-J were already the lowest Pukkelpop could go. If any act was to be named headliner prematurely my guess would be Tame Impala, but they seem nailed on for Werchter and would be a repeat (which Pkp doesn't seem to do with the bigger names).

Lowlands is dropping a first bigger batch of names 'in a couple of weeks'. That will be the first real indication of what to expect.

Alt-J played last year Werchter and then headlined PKP. Maybe they will do the same with Tame Impala... god knows...

Guns N Roses / Chemical Brothers / Some piss weak inexplicably popular band with one album release to their name

Perfectly realistic and it would do for me.

Seems Coachella payed 14 millions for 2 dates of GnR. I really don't think any european festival can afford them with the only exception of Glastonbury.

Saw that earlier. Glastonbury aren't big payers for headliners.

Rock In Rio can afford it, i think. Either them or Sabbath should be headlining 27/5

There's no point drawing comparisons with Glastonbury as they get massive bands because the bands want to play the festival. As Eavis said in the link Dave posted, the kudos and exposure they get from headlining is more important than the fee, which is usually around £300,000 (this may not even cover all the expenses for some of the biggest ones). Pretty much every other festival in the world has to pay the going rate for the biggest bands, which is why they tend to play their own stadium shows instead.

If the figures being banded around for GnR are true then there's no way PKP will be able to afford them. What could make it viable though is if a group of European festivals that take place around the same time get together and sort out a deal. I don't know whether this is something that happens very often but I can't see many single weekend/single site festivals affording them on their own?

Actually Glasto got U2 and The Rolling Stones playing. If they want they can.

they'd been trying to get U2 for 25+ years. They'd been trying to get the Stones for well over a decade.

These things happened because the bands wanted them to happen, and not because Glasto can get any band they want.

Massive bands will only take the small Glasto fee is they're happy to, and these two were eventually -  happy to. GnR play very few shows in comparison to those 2, and invariably always take the biggest pay-days when they do play shows.

It's not impossible that GnR might choose to do Glasto, but they're one of the least likely acts to do that going by their history.

Kanye dropping an album soon, Green Day and Gorillaz in the studio. Surely one out of this three must be doing festivals late Summer.

Gorillaz I imagine will be doing as any of the medium sized one's as they can as that's where their headline spots are going to be so Puckelpop on their budget is a shout.

Well in terms of big dance headliners/closers.

Prodigy are out, Calvin Harris and Deadmaus are too recent so that realistically leaves the Chemical Brothers and Disclosure if they want to take a Alt-J sized punt.

They'll be plenty of options generally. Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, the Cure, System of a Down (hopefully not) , The Strokes, Muse, Green Day, Florence etc etc.

Big question is what direction they'll take after such negative feedback last year and with them now being back in profit.

There were rumours a while back that The Chems were going to play SW4 but it looks like they're doing their own show in London (announcement is on Monday). SW4 are close to releasing their first names so that might give a few clues as to who's about (probably Pendulum and the usual raft of DJs). It's really too soon for Chase and Status to come back but that doesn't mean they won't. Die Antwoord are playing Sonnemondsterne the week before PKP and I wouldn't be surprised to see them get a late slot on the Main as they went down very well during the day a couple of years back. Jack U are also an unwelcome possibility, as is Skrillex on his own. Would love Kraftwerk with their 3D show but they don't tend to play the same festival twice.

Frequency have started selling early bird tickets so they can't be far off announcing their first names.

Agree that it will be interesting to see what they come back with this summer. It's worth remembering that despite the 'weak' headliners last year it still sold out, which means they will feel they got the line up right. Think the festival is potentially at a bit of a cross roads - another bill tailored towards the younger crowd will be a clear signal as to what direction they're moving in.
