I don't remember who named it The Thingy but I do remember where I was and which client I was not doing any work for when I spent an afternoon scouring the internet for the very first version of it. Posted no doubt to help the aimless speculation on release timing we get in mid March each year. Delighted to see people up and run with it. The only officially endorsed Thingy (by myself and BraveSirRobin) is Gnomicide's http://theglastonburythingy.weebly.com/

If your going to play with a Thingy, make it the real Thingy. It's even better than the real Thingy.
