Mad Ruffian’s latest visual effects promo for the In the Woods Festival comprises the best shots from the festival from 2012 -2014 in an entirely 3D world. By meticulously modelling the still photos in CG, and by projection mapping and digitally painting the images back over the CG, it allows the camera (and, therefore the viewers) to float over the scenes that are seemingly frozen in time. Rather than looking at a picture of people having fun, you feel as though you are immersed and actually there... and then, just as you're getting into it, the music (Glass Animals’ Holiest [feat. Tei Shi]) takes over with the energy exploding in a cosmic light orgasm of CG distortion. The animated displacement mesh of light and webbing is peeled away from the reality of the photo to reveal its musical innards and then, all too soon, you're brought back down to earth. Director Christopher Watson-Wood (Creative Director of Mad Ruffian and Ruffian Post) directed the festival's only other promo in 2012 to Alt-J's "Fitzpleasure" and worked closely with Charlie Andrew (this year's Brit Award winner for Best Producer), who is also one of the festival curators. Chris won Gold in Cannes in 2011 for the Framepool/LBB/Fireflies Challenge and since establishing Mad Ruffian and Ruffian Post in the past year, he has lead his team win a 2015 Popai Award and to be nominated for both Creative Circle for Best Cinema Campaign and a UKMVA for Best Visual Effects in a Music Video.
