mazataz
Hi I am a newbie and first timer but have been following this thread for a while. Just after some advice. Half our group are wanting to sleep in their cars on the Thursday night from about 10pm at Gate D, as they have a long drive. The other half are wanting to arrive at around 5am to gate D. What are the chance of finding each other/ being directed to the same gate? Thanks

Thanks It's likely that you won't be able to find each other as there will be a huge queue behind them by the time the others arrive. This is a small section of the gate d queue at 7am, the front of it was on the other side of the hedge and they weren't letting anyone through. We can't leave until 8am from Brighton now on the Wednesday, so I don't reckon we'll arrive until 10:30ish now. What Gate do you usually go in at? I am still not going to get there until I have had my fry up but go in gate D last year it was a straight walk in no queues. but i do belive they had issues with the gare and then re opened it . time before that we queued for half an h our if that and walked in. there is plenty of room to camp if you don't mind a walk
Skoo
Thanks for that. I think we are D this year as trying to camp near friends who are set on South Park. Maybe see you there!
stardustjunkie
Can someone explain the appeal of Pennards please? Whenever I've walked past it, it looks like hell haha. All the tents are so crammed in! Personally I don't see why you would want to spend an evening in a cold long queue for hours overnight for the sake of camping in one particular field. At the end of the day your tent is where you sleep and occasionally friends group together. Is it worth the tiredness, long night, cold etc for the sake of pitching in Pennards? That's the question I'd be asking myself at least But then I don't know why Pennards is so popular so maybe if I knew that I'd be trying to camp their too haha. I dont even do it for the camping spot (tho there are 15 in our group this year, so will need some space!)... i do it to make the festival last as long as possible

I guess it's just because Pennards is the closest campsite to the 'naughty corner' and so saves a trek back each night (if that's where you generally end up). It's also got a reputation as a bit of a party field, whilst at the same time being more of a 'hippy' field because it's also closest to the Greenfields etc so is known for having a distinct culture. That being said, the culture of any campsite is largely determined by whoever ends up pitching up next to you! I camped in Pennards for many years and loved it, but over the last couple of years it's become so difficult to get a spot there that we've gone elsewhere. Firesprice
Did it in 2014. Spent the night in the queue drinking half a crate of Stella and getting stuck into my stash. Didn't sleep a wink and felt like death in the morning. Walk of death to camspite and could barely put my tent up! Never again!
shepton fuchsias
If its any use to anyone, the Cannnards Well is opening all night to allow festival goers a chance for breakfast prior to going in. Better than standing out in the pissing rain if the weather is bad.
Staitey
I personally arrive Wednesday late morning with very little queuing required. We do however camp in Bushy Grounds which is typically more quiet with plenty of room to pitch up.
LetsGoToMars
I've queued for the last 3 years, as we've always had a big group and wanted to be in Pennards. This year we only need to get 3 tents in. We're camping in Glastonbury town Tuesday night, so can join the queue fairly easily early Wednesday. What time do people think we'd need to be in the car park to get through the gates in time to get 3 tents in Pennards?
ManchesterGlasto
We want to camp in Big Ground so thinking of getting in the queue Tuesday night as I know it fills up quickly. By what time is Big Ground full?

Take it all in this time and worry about being one of the first through the gates when it matters to you. Enjoy your festival

rpfranks
We prefer the Tuesday night, all part of the experience. Leave about midnight, get there for 3am, grab the chair, tents, few beers and join the queue. Head back to car for the rest after. There is usually about 12 of us though so we have to go early or risk being separated we camp in kidney mead and it fills up quite quickly so if we went for Wednesday afternoon we might struggle to get all of us in together. If you're set on Oxlyers head towards the fence away from the Other stage as there may be some space towards the back.

Not sure how quickly it fills up but there are 10 of us so ive been told we have to get there as early as possible. People on this forum seem so much more experienced so thought I would ask. I am trying not to over plan anything and just go with the flow. Not long now

You have the right idea about not planning and going with the flow. Dont timetable yourself too much and do what you want to do, dump your friends explore the site, talk to strangers, and prepare for your outlook on life never to be the same again. Not long now Just to give you an idea - the field in the middle here is Paines (was Dairy) https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Pilton,+Shepton+Mallet,+Somerset/@51.1501931,-2.5988528,548m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x4872234879b7a5db:0xd05fc2ae5151fc35!8m2!3d51.1657253!4d-2.589688 There is no que at Gate D - this is about 11am ish on Weds.Whilst it looks pretty full there are pockets of space around - and loads of room in the adjacent fields too.
