GREENMAN VS END OF THE ROAD

Hello!!

Trying to decide between going to Greenman and End of the Road - I've not been to either and can't decide which to go for.  It will just be me and my boyfriend but we still want something where theres music and other stuff going on quite late. We've been to Glastonbury and like it when theres a lot going - obviously these are a lot smaller so I don't expect anything as big but would just like to know the general atmosphere of both, how big they are and just any general info which could help us make the decision!

Thanks :)

Its been a while since I've been to Green Man (2006) but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of late night stuff there - from memory there was a tent playing psych/dance, an all night camp fire and other stuff - of course it might have changed since then!  I really loved GM, and its definitely on my must-go-again list!

Can only speak from an End Of The Road perspective

  • Capacity is between 12k and 15k, including artists and staff
  • Never, to me, feels overcrowded with the possible exception of early evening when there are a lot of people trying to get food at the same time
  • The site is fairly compact and you can get from any one stage to another in minutes
  • The weather is generally pretty decent, glorious at times. We've had rain, but it all dries up pretty quickly.
  • The main stages end at around 11pm, but there are usually three late night sets in the Tipi tent, as well as a silent disco and another disco in the woods until around 2am. Also the cider bus will be playing tunes until late.
  • Think some of the comedy goes on after the main stages end as well.
  • General atmosphere is very relaxed. The party types are few and far between and tend to stand out like a sore thumb. The majority of the crowd, I would say are in that 25-40 age bracket. A mixture of letting loose and just chilling and kicking back with the music

Firstly, while I'm going to both again this year, my favorite of the two is definitely EOTR.

Good summary from Shoebox.  Small add would be that EOTR is definitely colder at night than GM due to the difference in time of year and the position of the site. Consequently you get many less people hanging outside their tents after the music finishes.

My impression is that GM has more to do after hours, but I'm then not a night owl.

As you may suspect, being in a Welsh mountain river valley provides a micro-climate that is often less predictable and rainier/damper/colder than the rest of the country.

The festivals are of a similar size in terms of people, but GM is more family-friendly as it takes place in the middle of the school holidays, and thus gets a broad age range; whereas EOTR is the weekend before schools go back and has far far fewer school age children.

Both are in beautiful settings, have great food choices, real ale etc.

Assuming the weather not being horrendous, I'd hope you would enjoy either.

I would suggest you both take a good look at the line-ups, and think how much you favour one over the other.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all your advice! To be honest, we had planned on greenman all along but the only reason I had looked at end of the road is because broken social scene are playing who I have never seen and I'm worried they won't come over and play again! Such a hard decision. i really love devendra banhart too but then the greenman line up is also excellent!

Tough tough choices!
