Radiohead Headlining 2017

Who's making this decision? The band? Their management/agents? The touring company? The venue?

All of the above. The band set a price for their performance - and usually make 60% ish of the total. The rest all battle for the overspill through fees etc. Its the bands greed basically, and the fact they don't sell records anymore so its the only way to make money.

Started in the 90s when it became obvious that people were paying 4-5 times over the odds via scalpers. So why not charge the cash themselves instead of letting someone else have it?

Just be happy you don't live in America. Stones, Macca, Fleetwood Mac, Beyonce, Bruce etc all charging over $250 (some of them over $500) as an average ticket price.

Still selling out though so its simple supply and demand. All the people who bought Radiohead tickets are part of the problem. They''ll charge more on the next tour as a result.

If only DICE began implementing anti-tout measures - unless they already do, and I'm being daft. But they're all e-tickets via an app, with no booking fees.

Y'know, make it so that when you sign up, you do so with a picture of yourself and have your IDs checked on the door - only for certain events maybe. They have an internal reselling feature as well I think. The problem must lie not with the bands but with the venues; I suppose these huge arenas must have affiliations and deals with ticket companies. Shame.

I think it was pretty tout proof with you having the code scanned off your phone to get in and stuff. They've recently implemented a feature where you can send tickets to another DICE user, which could obviously be used unethically.

Those are London prices though. Could be wrong but I feel like I paid closer to £60 for Manchester last time.

Excerpt from my conf e-mail in 2012 for the MEN

Quote

Seat location: section BL 112, row T, seats 5-6
Total Charge: £145.25

I suppose with booking fees subtracted the "price" might have been sixty-something, but on the face of it, that's virtually the same as Russy paid.

In all the excitement I forgot to give a big thank you to @stuartbert two hats for sharing the presale link with me, you're a gentleman and I owe you one mate!

That's ok.  They just sent the link to their tour page - all I did was confirm that there was no extra magic link.

Yeah the ability to send a ticket to another user makes it a bit more difficult to deal with. Surely the ability to screenshot means it isn't tout proof as-is, anyway.

I like their ticket queuing system though; if a show is sold out you can request to be popped in a queue, then if people are unable to make it and are looking to sell back, the tickets are offered to the queue in order. Unlike, say, ticketmaster, where it's luck of the draw.

Speaking of ticketmaster, it was possible to get tickets from them about a week beforehand for the O2 in 2012. Just in case anyone missed out, there's a definite possibility of being able to pick some up later.

Having thought about it, I've seen Radiohead seven or eight times, in big and small venues. Seen them do sets of rarities and fan favourites as well as career spanning sets (the 2008 Old Trafford setlist  will never be beaten, look it up).

At Glastonbury it won't just be obsessives like us, there'll be a huge section of people who only know the most popular stuff. I actually want them to do a greatest hits set at GF. As populist as they can, get the entire field going, if they bring the hits the atmosphere there will be fantastic.

For that reason I'm changing it to:

Creep

Street Spirit

Paranoid Android

Karma Police

No Surprises

There There

Oh! Oh right!

So, you don't want to be that guy, then you have two goes at it?

What a fucking liberty.

Actually the link in the email did send you to a amended version of the tour dates page, with the presale dates shown. The actual bog standard tour dates page only showed the 4th November links for the general sale.

£80 odd standing for an alright venue I can just about forgive - but the arena is beyond shite. whenever I've been the sound has been really quiet and the lighting a bit bright, which has always made for a really flat atmosphere for gigs that should have been incredible.

Child 3 (15 years old) talking to me about the new dates last night:

"What? Eighty quid to stand in a soulless arena...?"

God, I love him.

Fair enough. I was positive I didn't pay over £70 (using WASTE) but that's probably right and not as bad as I was saying.

I think the screenshots don't work and/or the QR codes are unique. The waiting list is a very good idea and is probably fairer than reselling at FV, but I think this tweak in the system must be for if the ticket holder can't make it but their party can.

Yeah I went out on a limb with the screenshots - never tried it or anything. Makes sense. I understand the tweak there, but just making it so you have to assign a name to each ticket when you buy 'em probably solves that. I mean, it's not ideal - I love buying 4 tickets to a gig and seeing who of my mates wants em - but for specifically anti-touted gigs, I don't think it's too radical.

I don't get the hate with arenas. The crowd makes the difference - the building doesn't matter that much. I've been to great venues with pants crowds, and pants venues with great crowds. If the MEN is full of Radiohead fans all going mental, you'll soon forgot you're in a 'soulless' arena!

Not sure I've ever been to an arena gig and thought that the sound was anything better than m'kay.

And many where it was less than that. Can't remember the last arena gig I went to. There's a link between the last two sentences.

Did you experience the sound for James Blake at West Holts this year?

Oh. My. Word.

Arena, Ashmena.

:)

Ben

I actually saw James Blake at Hammersmith Apollo last night and thought it was surprisingly even better than the WH set (performance and sound).

But I'm not sure if the Apollo falls within your argument here (as it's not quite arena size)

Not arena sized and not an arena, Tom!

I've been to the Apollo maybe three times and the sound was exceptional every time, including Sigur Ros in 2000-and-something, one of my five best gigs of all time, not least of all for the sound. It was designed for acoustics!

Glad JB was great. Loving him more and more and WH was one of my GF2016 highlights.
