This is my first, and perhaps my only, Glasto so should I bring my camera (compact digital) or rely on my phone? Plus side = better pictures. Minus side = It might get damaged/stolen and having to carry it around all day or keep trekking back to the lock ups. I'd be interested to know what other peoples experiences are. Thanks in advance. I'd say take your compact on account of the superior pictures and battery life. Probably depends on how compact it is though, any SLR style bolt on lens and you move so far down the picture quality/convenience continuum that its not worth bothering with. I use a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 camera and that is stored in ny belt pouch - now I would be dead reluctant to take photos using a Smartphone as that is far more likely to be dropped - fine when there is no one about but the place is like walking down Oxford street in the sales in fact its only because I have access to power and wi-fi { the crew areas have wi-fi } and I am within a secure area why I would consider taking one - if I was a normal ticket holder I would revert to a cheap phone that one charge would last me the whole week. The year Paul McCartney was there - may be 2004 - it started raining many were holding up phones { to make a sound recording } but for at least seven people around me - they dropped them - not sure if they found them as the area was chock a block - that was just people one or two lines in front of me so you have to wonder how many were dropped that night. I certainly will have my Panasonic Lumix with me and will be using it.
Losing my hair
Once again thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply, I'm constantly amazed at how helpful people on this site are. I think I'll bring the camera, use a tool lanyard for security & if it all gets too much of a ballsache I'll put in the lock up. I can't believe how childishly excited I am. I'm going with a couple of first timers this year and it's gonna be so good seeing their faces! My number one tip really is to do what you want, when you want to. You're already off to a winner as you're on your own, so you don't have to satisfy the demands of another - whether mate or partner - it's all on your schedule. So if you're halfway through a set and not really feeling it, then just walk away. Go have a bit of food, or do something else. Glastonbury is such a short time, you can't waste it watching stuff you don't enjoy. The more I go, the less bands I see - id always rather go head into the theatre and circus fields for fun things. But ultimately - it's your festival, you set the agenda. Let nobody tell you what a 'must see' is! Definitely agree. Wasn't enjoying Gregory Porter on the Pyramid Stage, I was tired, a bit fed up and at a loose end and didn't know what to do and wandered to, possibly the Sensation Seekers' Stage? Where I found Lekkido Lord of the Lobsters, in the rain with about 30-40 people watching. And we were all joining in with the singing and the dancing and it was fantastic. From there I went into the theatre bar where a dj was playing music, he put on the Specials "Message to you Rudi" and one of the New York Brass Band got his trombone out, stood on the table and played along to the chorus. That's Glastonbury for me, not the headliners but the unexpected, the unknown but the treasured memories.

Have a look in pound shops/lidl/Aldi for a 9-Led Mini Pocket Torch and funny enough they cost a £1 - takes three AAA batteries. I used to show up with my Maglite but then it struck me I did not have to see for miles - I was able to get some with a belt pouch so its always at hand - trust me a lot of these campsites are very tricky to get across and near impossible if you don't have a handy torch { the smaller the better } also at the same time look out for a 'UFO CAMPING led light ' - have seen them on sale for £2/£3 or close - they take three AA batteries. that is my star buy - it hangs down from the top of the tent and is well worth getting + as it can be seen from the outside people are less likely to trip over your tent. They even sell them with a remote control so you can stand there and press it and your tent lights up but my one is the manual version. just two items that makes camping a real pleasure - I see fellow volunteers who never carry a torch and they trip over X amount of guy lines and each year its the same people - cant really work it out as they know at night its pitch dark. they are the same people who will lose their phone each year - they will leave it on a table and wander off and they are bloody lucky its a crew area so people will hand in items. Spindles
If you can get one of those UFO lights that is a donut shape you can stick it over a 2l pop bottle filled with water and it becomes one hell of a lamp.

CaledonianGonzo
Rather than different sorts of lights and torches I just have a Petzl which is hands free and can be used as a torch for navigating and also as an in-tent light. As it is my first festival since IoW 1970 (64 in case you’re wondering) I’m sort of assuming that the festival experience has changed in the past 47 years and so I’m after a few hints and tips. Bit of background; I’ve got a ticket (that was like a military operation – is it always like that?) and the balance due date is in my diary. I’m coming on my own. I’ve booked Nat. Express from Northampton, due to arrive mid-afternoon Wednesday. I’ve read Tort’s FAQs (twice). I’m excited by Radiohead and Foo Fighters, hoping for Angel Olsen, Diana Ross and Mark Lanegan but I’m particularly looking forward to seeing bands I’ve never heard of. I’m finding the webcam strangely soothing. So what I’m after is hints and tips on; Camping – arriving at gate A, do I head east towards Lime Kiln/Hitchin Hill, South towards Darble/Pylon/Rivermead or join up with Camp Solo who I think camp in Darble? A long walk back to the tent really doesn’t bother me. Making the most of my first Glastonbury. Let me know what you think I really ought to do/see and things that a newbie might just miss. Thanks in advance. i dof my cap to you sir my top tip would be to find me at my camp and we can have a port and smoke a pipe or two whilst talking about the youth of today and how this wouldn't have happened in our day
