2019 festival

Bastille and 1975 both have new albums coming out first 1/4 of 2019. The festival just seems like a Radio 1 offshoot now. All artists that feature a lot on that radio station and regularly hits top 40 will play.

The headliners seem to feature going back the last 4 years since it started changing the line ups:

1) A skinny jeans indie or american pop rock band (FOB, PATD, Kasabian, Foals, FOB, The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Blink 182, Paramore, Mumford)

2) A dad rock stadium band (Kings of Leon, Muse, Biffy, Metallica, QOTS, Foo Fighters)

3) A classic crowd pleaser that is listened to by all music fans (Kendrick, Eminem, RHCP, Disclosure,  Green Day)

Arctic Monkeys and Foos, one of them will headline Glastonbury and the other will go to R/L. They won't share because the people will go to one or the other and after spending so much on a headliner, the subs will be sub par and that is what will have to drive ticket sales over glastonbury. I can see Foos doing Glastonbury and AM doing Reading.

The hip hop acts need to be one that appeals to all fans, Stormzy isn't and doesnt have an album planned. 2 albums doesnt a headliner make. That spot will be filled with Bastille or 1975. Watching Bastille sub in '17 the crowds absolutly loved it but the 1975 is bringing that big following too. They both get a lot of R1 airplay too so a possible co-headliner though both are very similar. Would likely see Royal Blood co-headline with Bastille as a weaker headline made up by AM the next day or 1975 on their own.

Finally the stadium band dad rock seems to be a remnant that is getting watered down from the classic days of R/L and we will likely get a classic crowd pleaser for the late 20s that was the soundtrack to their age 10-15 like Blink 182, Green Day, QOTS, RHCP, Biffy. QOTS is probably the cheapest of the lot and brought in a great crowd during NME secret set last year.

That is why I am going with Royal Blood/Bastille (co-headline) - Arctic Monkeys - Queens of the Stone Age

Solid line up, should win back the fans that called quits on it this year when AM and foos weren't announced, cheap to and keeps in tradition of past festivals whilst blooding in new headliners.

Foo Fighters headlined Glastonbury last year.

I know in recent years they've tended to mix the days up a little, but usually when there's a heavier headliner there's a heavier undercard, such as the Metallica day in 2015, or both the Paramore/QOTSA and Blink 182 days in 2014.

Was thinking of having Frank Turner 3rd down on that day and Brockhampton 4th though.

2014/15 will be 4/5 years ago come next year. That can’t be considered recent years.

I can't see the Foos doing Glasto again so soon...

Turner third down is a pretty solid bet for me actually come to think of it, he seems to be able to sell out decently sized arenas which is probably the going rate for a third down act. Perhaps radio 1 headliner may suit him a bit better though given his fan base is a bit of a cult following, could be a good alternative to whichever RnB artist is chosen as the RnB headline next year.

Mate you do realise Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott aren't RnB artists.

I could see the Foos doing one night.  The dance day could be anything, I wouldn't know.  Pearl Jam are working on an album so I could potentially see them headlining again.  I think every day they headlined a festival this summer theirs were the days that sold out quicker than most, and they played some massive shows on their own.  But I've also heard they aren't coming back to Europe until 2020.

I'd like to see either the Stereophonics or the Manics headline the Radio 1 stage but sadly can't see that happening even though they'd fill it out and both have had top five albums.

What the fuck?

For a start, those three categories are unbelievably dumb. "Skinny jeans indie band" hasn't been a thing since like 2007, and they also have nothing in common with American pop rock bands so god knows why they're together as one category. Also if Mumford and Sons belong in any of these categories it's the dad rock one.

None of the acts in that final category are listened to by all music fans. I certainly don't listen to RHCP, Eminem and Green Day. And Disclosure certainly aren't a classic crowd pleaser. And tbh neither is Kendrick Lamar; loads of people who think R&L should just be a rock festival won't have wanted to see him.

Foo Fighters headlined Glastonbury last year and there's no suggestion that they'll be active next Summer.

Neither Foo Fighters or Arctic Monkeys would cost enough that the subs would be sub par. Glastonbury get headliners of that level or above every year. They had Foos headline last year and still had Biffy Clyro subbing one of the days.

Stormzy does have an album planned, we just don't know when it's coming out. Anyway, he posted a hour about Glasto on Instagram the other day so if he headlines anywhere next year I'd expect it to be there. Loads of headliners have done so with two albums anyway; your "classic crowd pleaser" Disclosure headlined with two albums.

Bastille are certainly not headlining R&L. The 1975 probably will, unless they headline Glasto instead. Royal Blood won't headline next year. If they were gonna headline on the back of this album it'd have been this year.

QOTSA also probably won't return now until they've got a new album. If they were gonna headline on the back of this album then it should have been this year, but they did their own day festival instead.

The dance day? There's never been a dance day lol.

Pearl Jam are never playing R&L again. Why would they want to? None of their fans are there. R&L have accepted who their audience are now and we aren't getting old headliners like The Cure or Pearl Jam anymore.

Oh sorry, my mistake.  What category do Eminiem and Kendrick fall into then?

Why would Pearl Jam want to play?  None of their fans are there... OK.

The 1975 + BMTH (Co-Headline) - I didn't like this idea at first but for FR it seems like it would make sense having a heavier act, then a more pop/indie act with a massive broad appeal closing both sites

Drake - after this year and how quick the kendrick day sold out another global hip hop artist makes sense and drake has a massive broad appeal and also appeared at reading before with giggs

Arctic Monkeys - has a huge broad appeal for indie fans, rock fans and kids leaving college who like more popular music and also i think FR attempted to get them this year because Melvin commented on them headlining also

They’re Hip Hop/Rap Artists.

There’s no way Pearl Jam would go down well at R+L nowadays lol. They’d probably still shift a load of day tickets but they may as well do their own shows

They’re hip hop artists.

Pearl Jam would go down like a lead balloon and they know it which is why they will continue to play their own huge shows where everyone loves them and wants to be there specifically to see them.

Also people who keep bringing up bands like Stereophonics and the Manics, see the above. Nobody would give a fuck about them at R&L. It would be a waste of a slot. Why stick the Manics headlining that stage who will play to a half empty tent (if that, YMAS and FLUME had half empty tents last year and they’re way more relevant to R&L’s audience) when they can have someone like Blossoms or Anderson .Paak there who will Paak (lol) the tent out?

You say that but the Stereophonics has massive crowds that I saw on the telly this summer and it wasn't all old duffers like me.

Where were these big crowds? TRNSMT? TRNSMT caters more towards that audience than R&L does.

Where at? Rize Festival and TRNSMT where they headlined and were on a bill filled with similar artists who their fans would want to see, as opposed to headlining the Radio One Stage subbed by Krept and Konan or something?

You do remember Liam getting one of the biggest crowds of the weekend last year don't you?  The older bands still have a lot of crowd pulling power.

Liam Gallagher isn’t in the same boat as Stereophonics, Manics etc. Oasis are a phenomenon in this country that every generation after them seems to be into at some point. He will always attract big crowds because of that legacy.

Thats like saying ‘Wow did you see the size of the crowd Jonathan Davis pulled at Download? Fear Factory or DevilDriver should totally headline!’
