I can't think of an international manager who is getting more out of their players.

I wouldn't argue with that.

Less qualified managers have been given jobs in the premiership, but championship seems more likely.

He's managed in the Scottish third tier and the Irish Premier in club football. He's hardly overqualified for the English 3rd or 4th tier. If he gets a Championship job he'd be a gamble.

I suspect he would get a mid table championship job.

At best, if he's lucky I would guess.

It depends whether owners look him as a manager who can generally improve players, or someone just suited to working with a limited squad.

Managing money will be a far bigger question for club chairmen unless they have a DoF and O'Neill is happy to work under one. O'Neill has zero experience of managing a budget.

It is rumoured that he is lined up for Hearts up here. So mid table championship probably about right. Though I'd imagine he'd have more money to spend in the championship.

His achievements with  Norn Iron have been astonishing. How well that translates into a club side remains to be seen.

I reckon history shows that success by a manager at one place doesn't necessarily transfer to another, and that one strong part of what makes a success is the combination of everything (players, timing, attitudes, 'feeling', etc).

Having said that, I'm not wanting to diminish what he's done with N.Ireland, which as you say has been astonishing - and I hope it continues.

I find it difficult to get behind Northern Ireland after observing the abuse the fans gave John Hartson in an international just because he had played for Celtic.

Tis a different type of tribal mentality up there. Lovely people, but some elements are rough as hell and still stink up football. Tis changing slowly but surely, but there are reasons why a friendly with the Republic a few years ago happened behind closed doors...........

Coleman has done a great job with Wales, but has been mediocre at best everywhere else at club level. Some managers just fit a team perfectly.

You're not wrong there, even going back to the early 90s with mike walker doing a great job at Norwich. Tried he's luck at Everton and he didn't do much else after that.

didn't he retire briefly around 5 years ago?

He retired from live tv commentary nearly 10 years ago. Think the 2008 European Championships was the last major tournament he did. He continued doing radio and match of the day etc after that though.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

They're doing at WHU exactly what they did at Birmingham:

  • Promise big name signings and chase massively unrealistic targets.
  • Only sign players they've heard of.
  • Pull out of deals and try to blame the other club.
  • Blame the manager and players when it all goes wrong.
  • Try to get a bigger stadium at no cost to themselves (at one point Birmingham was talking about an Olympic bid, guess who wanted the stadium afterwards...)
  • Display a high level of contempt for supporters at all times.
