Diff location. Life Is Beautiful happens in downtown Vegas. This isnt that.

ah my bad

vegas is definitely a good place to do these kinds of mega niche fests - arguably these rock lineups are very un-vegas, pretty much any other music would suit it more

It's not that deep. The relatable, easy to digest comedy is always gonna be popular for large swathes of the audience, same with a lot of media. You seen how much money Marvel films rake in? Or how many tickets Sheeran sells?😂

Fair point. Just strikes me that sense of humour - more so than musical taste - is a very tribal thing and what makes me piss my pants laughing (Stewart Lee for example) wouldn’t land with 95%+ of the country. Having mass appeal comedy that actually makes people lose their shit in giggles just feels like a misnomer to me. Maybe I’m a cynic, or maybe the country is full of boring unimaginative dullards. I’m not sure. Perhaps I’m just an outlier.

I'm also a massive Stewart Lee fan so I get your struggle. But in a selfish way I'd rather Stewart play the venues he does an not massive arenas, so in a way im glad he isn't Peter Kay big.

I think if you think of Peter Kay as the current torch bearer of eg end of the pier entertainment, working mens clubs and variety shows that were popular in the 60s/70s it clicks – it's fairly relatable, extremely easy to digest and an integral part of British cultural DNA. I'm also not a fan but it makes a lot more sense to me when I look at it through that lens.

Yep.  They rerecorded their 1986 debut and it is that which they have toured of late, so mostly thrash stuff.  Only done a few dates though and none here.

Hell stage then? 😉

Both great points.  And I think Stewart Lee would probably implode with self loathing and imposter syndrome if he got that big!  Snowflake/Tornado tour was the last time I can remember laughing so hard it hurt. God, I love that feeling.

For me Peter Kay is fairly relatable and he will be for loads of families especially in working class areas. It’s inoffensive and doesn’t see it self as too serious.

I will be trying for tickets as it reminds me of my mum and dad. During the last tour he did I had tickets for me and my mum who died before we got to see him.

it doesn’t take away from other comedy that I like. In fact I booked tickets for Nick Mohamed’s show last week.

If anything I'd say this was intimate for them, they're an arena band. Brixton Academy level acts like Supergrass/Jungle/Becky Hill have been booked for Crystal Palace Park the past couple of years.

Lumineers are playing the main bit of the park - where Wireless Festival was held. Different bit to the bowl where Supergrass etc played - much bigger.

I can appreciate the level tbf - I'm aware he's a huge comedy name. Had he toured a few years ago as planned I think it would've been one of the biggest selling comedy tours ever. It's not my thing based on prior clips but it's not worth being snooty about.

I'm more just not a fan of comedy shows in arenas. I saw Russell Howard in Birmingham at the NEC Arena a few years back and his set was good but I think I'd have preferred it somewhere smaller. It's odd in a way as I don't have that scale issue with music, given I have little issue with arena music gigs, but I kinda found it jarring with comedy. I also saw Jack Whitehall at the O2 but his set was less than amazing so that had more issues than just venue.

I know what you mean, one person on a stage can get lost in a massive arena

I saw Monty Python at the o2 and it didn’t work, but then I saw Phoenix Nights at Manchester arena and that did work.

I bet as a comedy performer you must get a huge kick stepping out and hearing a big room like that giggle along. But yeah. I feel like comedy works more for me in a smaller space and having one person on a stage is tricky.

The two acts I listed tried their own gimmicks - Russell Howard had a 360 stage in the middle of the arena with big screens, while Whitehall had musical numbers at the start and end with arena-style staging, backing dancers and fireworks. But I kinda just feel happier being in a small theatre.

Never in the front row though. I'm aware that's the prime target for being picked on by the performer haha.

Is it the same site where they had that mass shooting at the country fest a couple of years ago?

(not being a dick, genuinely curious)

No the shooting was the south end of the strip opposite Luxor, the LV Festival Grounds are near the Stratosphere the other end of the main strip. Only reason I know was I was in Vegas a couple of weeks ago and wondered the exact same thing!

No, as mentioned above, south end. Also theyve added some things when theres outdoor events. Your room might get searched or checked if its facing an event or the strip during an event. Had a notice like that when I saw Shania back in Feb and the vegas marathon was happening the next day. An apartmen building was right across from the fairgrounds and there were cops on the balconies.
