I'm not saying he's unknown, clearly he isn't, he's playing a stadium show.

I'm saying I have not heard of him, which for someone playing a stadium show, is a first for me. A worrying first as despite my age, this place keeps me fairly up to date with what is big or isn't in the UK and beyond. Many times I won't have heard someone but I've usually at least heard of them.

Aye, I said on a site not far from here that this booking is a bit of a watershed moment for me. First time that an act has played a properly massive venue and I've never even heard of them.

Yeh this is the first stadium headliner I've ever seen who I've genuinely never even heard the name for and I feel extremely old because of it

Wizkid's always sold really well in London specifically so this feels like a decent step up from doing O2 dates again. He's had a couple of semi-hits and collabs but the Afrobeats fans/African diaspora here just absolutely adore him.

To each their own I guess! I'm hardly an expert (or a massive Wizkid fan tbh) but to me it's where some of the best music in the world is being made right now. Plenty of variety if you dig beyond the most well-known artists.

We were excited, then a friend of mine who works in the press told me that the tickets started at £250, and went up to £450.....  so we're not going

Me too.

But on closer inspection, I’m not that surprised. In a genre that I don’t follow, and his Spotify numbers are just under 10m ML, which is impressive enough, but not exactly huge. Chart figures are very underwhelming too. Only ever played one UK gig at wireless fest in Birmingham, and overall very few gigs listed on setlists.fm.

So until now, he hasn’t done anything to even remotely suggest he’s stadium sized. Not to say the audience isn’t there, but he certainly has gone under the radar.

Well he sold 3 nights at The O2 and even then fans without tickets rushed the barriers so the demand was certainly there for London stadium shows.

I stand somewhat corrected, but strange there’s nothing on setlist.fm for these shows. Wizkid fans don’t care for it I guess.

I think it's incredible that someone like Wizkid can be massive in their own lane and completely pass a lot of music fans by and makes me so excited for what's to come.

The industry is going to be a lot healthier for everyone when artists like this – who have always been 'othered' both at festivals like Glastonbury and in media – can use socials and streaming to directly connect with people who vibe with it.

The fact that two African artists – two! – will sell out stadium shows this summer in the UK to a UK audience and barely trouble Radio 1 playlist or mainstream media is absolutely unreal and is absolutely worth celebrating.

Big assumption but:

Most of the people in here who haven't heard of Wizkid probably wouldn't have heard of Burna Boy either if he hadn't done a major slot at glasto in 2022.

One of my friends has tickets to see Viagra Boys there next week and it’s been moved to Troxy, a venue on the other side of London with a reduced capacity (about 1k less).

Because the new venue is smaller, they’ve had to invalidate some tickets and offer refunds, which is such a shame.

Seems like they’re really struggling to find replacement venues at short notice.

Couldn’t agree more! Given there has been an ongoing conversation for years it seems about where the next stadium rock band is (as it turns out, Sam Fender), it is great that at least stadium gigs are seen as a step-up worth making as an artist.

It does make me wonder though that the only (recent) artists big enough to do stadiums are solo acts - Wizkid, Burna Boy. The Weeknd, Harry Styles and Fender too. the only bands doing stadiums (for the first time) recently are K-Pop acts

Mostly agree with this but it's not true to say that Wizkid/Burna Boy aren't fairly prominent on Radio 1.
