TheGayTent
It will be difficult for the players psychologically but there’s no way Southgate will give them any other message than giving 100% to winning the game.
jyoung
Vardy starting upfront apparently.

kaosmark2
I would not fancy England vs Senegal at all. They've been excellent all tournament and I think their pace on the counter would wreck our defense. Regardless of opposition in the quarters, I think the priority has to be trying to reach them. Japan/Columbia would be a much easier match-up, both in terms of quality of team and ability to nullify and punish England.
dentalplan
I have learnt from this game that I would like a Valderrama-Higuita buddy cop show.

Hugh Jass
Last ten minutes of that Japan game were utterly ridiculous. Japan knew they were going through on disciplinary record so they spent the whole final 10 passing the ball between their back four to avoid any booking or anything. I suspect that rule might be canned by the next WC.

kaosmark2
Gutted for Senegal. Best team in all 3 games they played, although only narrowly in this one. Not impressed with Japan attempting to see out a 1-0 loss. That sort of defensive play is far worse for football than tough tackling. Gucci Piggy
So, win the group and its: RO16: Japan QF: Brazil/Mexico SF: Uruguay/Portugal/France/Argentina Finish 2nd and it's: RO16: Colombia QF: Sweden/Switzerland SF: Spain/Russia/Croatia/Denmark Don't mind either way tbh. Senegal could have easily equalised and then they'd be screwed.

Gucci Piggy
8 changes for England. Pickford, Stones and Lingard the only survivors. Hmmm.

In my mind it's only the quarters that are more appetising for the 2nd place team. Japan are the worst team left in the tournament, and I find the thought of Spain or Croatia more daunting than any of the winner's semis. And at some point you have to face the likes of Brazil/Uruguay/Portugal/France (Argentina are shit).
jyoung
JONES?! If this is the case then we are going to have to rely on attacking down the flanks, I think.

Obviously you're only gonna play one of those semi final teams and likely the best of the lot. So the fact there's Russia and Denmark in there doesn't really matter because we'd almost definitely play Spain or Croatia. I'd give us way more of a chance against any of the other bracket SF opponents than against Spain. Japan - Brazil - France - ??? Colombia - Switzerland - Spain - ??? (Going by who I'd most expect to make it through out of the other teams) Pretty even overall if you ask me, and realistically if we don't make the final who's that bovved whether it's the semis or the quarters where we go out. Seeing as both routes seem pretty even, I'd like to just see us put on a great performance tonight and get a good win.
dentalplan
If we do win, I think next thing we have to hope for is Mexico drawing a booking out of Neymar.

Just thinking about this; I reckon Uruguay will make it to the semis from that part of the draw. Most likely in the worst possible way too. They're the new Argentina aren't they?
