Anyone see Spiritualized? How were they? Anyone got a setlist?

I thought they were great. It's been a few years since I saw them so it was good to hear the 'And nothing hurt' stuff even though I'd have preferred a few more LAGWAFIS tracks. Seemed to go down well with the majority of the crowd too.

Setlist

Hold on (intro)

Come together

Shine a light

Soul on fire

She kissed me

Then most (all?) of And nothing hurt in sequence.

Oh! Happy day

Surprised at the lack of crowds for Mitski compared to Stella Donnelly. Never seen Garden as rammed as it was for her.

I'm sure there's been busier than Stella but she did get a huge turnout. I wonder if Mitski was affected by Baxter Dury (who was joined by Rose Elinor Dougall, which just made me question why she wasn't doing her own set) and Wire being draws opposite her, or that she hasn't been around for a while - in any case the screams of appreciation she was getting are something I don't think I've heard at the festival before.

How was it for everyone? We had an absolutely amazing time. Just a near perfect weekend full of incredible music.

Highlights for me were the unbelievable Low, Parquet Courts, Squid, Viagra Boys, Kathryn Joseph, Fontaines DC, Shame, Pigsx7, Wand, Stella Donnelly, Black Midi, TVAM, Sweaty Palms and Kikagaku Moyo.

Only had a few disappointments. Goat Girl seemed bored on the main stage, probably would have been better in the Tipi but I missed that.

The main gripe is with the people chatting during quiet sets. We all came to see the gig not listen to some prick waffling on next to us. Luckily most times the crowd seemed to self police and people were told to shut up!

Saw so much music but still missed a ridiculous amount. What I love about EOTR is that you can have a completely different music festival to someone else, watching completely different styles all weekend but both will come away loving it.

Great to see so many bands just hanging out there, even ones not playing. Goes to show just how damn good it is.

Shout out to Pom Poko for showing up half an hour late meaning I gave up waiting and went to see the brilliant Crack Cloud instead.  Never heard them before but definitely will see them again and I got them have chat with their front man after the Viagra Boys’ TeePee set last night.

Such a good festival again and I say it was probably a draw with Green Man this year. Great people, great acts, great festival.

Absolutely brilliant weekend once again.

Musical highlights were:

Kokoko! - I'm not usually one for hyperbole, but that was genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Amazing innovative use of homemade instruments (à la Konono No 1) and the frontman had the crowd in the palm of his hand for the whole set. I can't think of another band on the planet that sounds anything like these guys - so good!

BCUC - explosive, ferocious energy and some mesmerizing drumming - shame I had to leave early on Sunday as their secret Tipi set would have been great.

Low - stunning, atmospheric set. Double Negative material sounds great live and I loved it when they went full MBV with the wall of noise during Do You Know How To Waltz. Drone not drones!

Kikagaku Moyo - hypnotizing grooves and huge, intense crescendos. Sound levels were a bit off to begin with (bass was far too loud and the guitars too quiet), but it didn't take them long to hit their stride once resolved. That last song in particular was mindblowing.

Fontaines D.C. - most fun set of the weekend for moshing and singalongs. No frills involved, just 50 minutes of post-punk bangers.

Sandro Perri - soothing, laid back vibes. Perfect for nursing the Sunday hangover, though would have been even better out in the sun on the Garden Stage. Was not expecting him to play the full 24-minute version of In Another Life, but was so glad that he did!

Penya - very intoxicating Afro-Latin grooves, and what an awesome trombone and bata player. Looking forward to seeing what they do on the next album.

Honourable mention goes to Michael Kiwanuka, who I thought totally justified his headline slot. Still kicking myself for leaving early to catch Derya Yildirim, meaning I missed Cold Little Heart and Love & Hate.

My only disappointments were Kero Kero Bonito (not really a fan of their new live set-up) and Yves Tumor, which was essentially glorified karaoke. He also seemed like a bit of a petulant twat when he hurled a wine bottle into the crowd and started threatening to kill someone just because his scarf had gone missing when he jumped on to the barrier.

Other than the music, there was great food on offer as always (top marks to The Curry Shed and the Cornish stall with the cajun fish burgers), and also some really beautiful art installations in the woods. I love all the care and attention that goes into every aspect of this festival and can't wait to return next year!

3rd year at EOTR and that one was so, so good!

Friday was mostly a big old day at the Garden Stage for us, but it was great to see Stella bring the band after seeing her perform last year solo and Mitski was, to answer her question, not what I expected but definitely a visual spectacle. Michael Kiwanuka was the highlight of the weekend for me - captivated the entire audience and his backing singer brought me to tears when she had a moment to shine midway through the set.

Saturday and Sunday were both more relaxing days for us in terms of certain must sees but I had a very jazzy day on the Saturday - by that, I mean both great and full of trumpets and saxophones. Nerija, Nubya and Moses Boyd were all excellent but Kate Tempest absolutely stole that day. Had to move slightly closer to the front as the Royal Mail gang decided a spoken word show was the perfect time to catch up and engage in massively loud conversation, but her ending song in particular was hard hitting in the best way. Split our time between Courtney and Low, so missed the first 15 minutes of Low but they were also on very, very fine form.

Used Sunday to see some comedy and Robin Ince's discussion in the literature tent. We discovered Anna Mann and wow, what a hilarious character. Then the absolute discovery of the festival was BCUC - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon, dancing around in the sun. We loved them so much we stayed up for their festival closing secret set in the Tipi. I saw the singer buying the sunglasses he wore for the Tipi set and asked him what time he was on later as he'd revealed they had 2 sets that day, and he just showed me his WhatsApp tour group and made me remember that it was never him who revealed it. Serpentwithfeet was also enchanting that day, but there was hardly anybody there! Guessing Cate Le Bon was pretty busy? He also finished way early so anyone hoping to catch the end would have been disappointed.

One thing I echo is where was Goan Fish Curry?? I was finally planning to try it for the first time this year... food options were overall amazing for me though, except Le Bao which we had the first night and was £9 for two tiny pieces of chicken, whereas you can get a full dumpling for £1 from the Tibetan kitchen. And the Persian had also ran out of lamb by the time we arrived one night. And I'm talking about food a lot. It was amazing, all of it! Can't wait to be back for the 15th birthday next year!

Pom Poko got shunted back because one of the Tipi acts pulled out and they moved someone else across from the Woods stage. I missed Crack Cloud and am still annoyed about it!

Good to meet up again, see you down the Joiners soon.

Pom Poko's (and BCUC's) timeslot was moved because of Steam Down moving to a later Tipi slot to replace Gia Margaret.

Really good to see you and your lad again. He was having great fun at the Shame gig when I last saw him. Yea, see you at the Joiners.

Ok, wasn’t sure what was happening and we’d left the Seazoo set early which was turning out to be a great first act oh the day. At least we’ll get to see Pom Poko soon at the Ezra gig.

Unless they were coincidentally running late, it felt strange for them to be moved off the biggest stage into the (programmed) smallest too.

Echoing everyone else, such a great year and despite feeling busy at times - I'm pretty sure even Idles didn't get the queue Fontaines DC had - the unique atmosphere was as it ever is. Personal highlights, in rough chronological order: Stella Donnelly, Mitski, Parquet Courts, Martha, KOKOKO!, Oliver Coates, Courtney Barnett, Seazoo, Crack Cloud, Tunng, BEAK>

Hard Skin (second surprise set) - Ruined by a crowd full of people missing the obvious irony and being utter pricks as a result. Throwing the term 'Nazi' like it was going out of fashion and trying to start a fight with the band. There music is bog standard but they're a comedy act, the problem with half the crowd not knowing this means this show paled in comparison to the fantastically fun 2016 set. I actually learned a worryingly large number of EOTR faithful are disappointingly hypocritical and honestly it put me off the crowd.  Now to be fair they shouldn't have been a secret set as the joke was lost on most people, but at the same time, fuck a good portion of the people in that crowd. YOU. ARE. ASSHOLES. AND. HYPOCRITES. As I'm sure a lot of these people would've gotten angry at someone talking a tad too much during a show they're enjoying but you guys were out there verbally yelling at the band, booing and saying really nasty things and it soured the experience for people enjoying themselves.

No excuse for the behaviour some of that crowd. They should've just left and let people have their fun. As if the organisers of this festival would put on a band so hellbent on insulting liberal cutlure and brag about the money they were making whilst doing so the banter and do so knowing the act was doing it straight faced. A band that spent their 2016 set telling everyone 'all the bands here are shit apart from Joanna Newsom and Hard Skin who you should all see' (they collaberated with Jo Newsom)

Sorry for the rant but it really shined an ugly light on some of the attendees at this festival. And the worrying thing is that this was coming from grown ass adults, not young people who were AVIN it large. Honestly one of the most appalling behaviours I've seen at a festival outside of Reading

Wow. Hadn't heard that about Hard Skin. Sounds like a very weird reaction from the crowd. It's painfully obvious what they are doing, not sure how people didn't get it.

I’d never heard of them before, and missed the secret set, but had friends tell me they thought they were high and aggressive — they definitely missed that it was an act. Seems like a strange booking for a secret set. And I feel bad for the band that they were apparently so misunderstood

But! Onto the main business... far and away my best End of the Road music wise, despite not seeing any of three main stage headliners.

Highlights:

Low — I’ve seen them 10+ times, including twice touring the latest album, and I’ve never seen a set like that before! Felt like I was being abducted. Unreal. Tho there were some talkers.. finally plucked up courage to tell them to shut it... not a nice experience at all, leaves one feeling very jittery as you just don’t know how ppl will react, but it was ruining it for me and I’m glad I did as they barked something inaudible back at me and then left

Mitski was honestly one of the best sets I’ve ever seen, from anyone. She’s amazing. I love her journey, the diversity of her — that tiny desk concert where she’s pulsing with rage and pain, and then what we saw this weekend all sex and poise. Shout out to SASAMI too, very excited to hear they’re going to be working together — loved both her sets on piano and big top, she’s go that brilliant seething rage thing going on too and I am SO here for it.

BCUC — no words. Had to run off for tunng halfway through and missed half the tunng set that was a “do not miss” for me, but I didn’t even care. I wish gyms would do BCUC dance classes instead of Zumba.

KOKOKO! — I was feeling utterly miserable on Saturday morning for various reasons ... from henceforth I am going to prescribe myself a Kokoko dance session to cure all blues — Gods of sunshine meteorological and metaphorical

Kate Tempest — I didn’t just shed a tear. I sobbed. Incredibly powerful. I can see and understand all the reasons that she’d be dismissed or that her earnestness could inspire cynicism but the reality is such a raw and compelling set of truths. Don’t know how anyone could fail to be affected

the murder capital — I’m not on board with a lot of the post punk everyone’s so excited about. But these guys are something else. So intense. All that tight eddying rage and melancholy. Dragged myself away from Deerhunter for the set and so glad I did

Tunng — had such fun when I got there after BCUC. Have wanted to see them for years, was joyous. “We all had a lovely time!”

Black Country — amazing. Glimpsed from the back at Green Man and made sure I was up the front for this set. They’re wonderful. Funny and talented. Hated the audience at Jockstrap, the worst all weekend, but they are something special too

Jarv Is — the friend I was with is a super fan and I’ve seen pulp before, expected to have a nice evening, but it was beyond fantastic. Love the new material and felt like a truly one-off night. That stage is the most special place.

So much more I enjoyed. Was running from stage to stage non-stop, definitely the most bands I’ve ever watched at a fest. Enjoyed Lewsberg, Let’s Eat Grandma, Cate le Bon, Black Midi, Kelly Lee Owens... so many more

biggest disappointment was missing serpentwithfeet, dashed over just before the end of Cate le Bon and it was already over. Heard from my friend it was brilliant.

Was my first eotr in five when we were not partaking in ... ahem...night time ... “wakefulness.. aids”.. Ahem. Which set a totally different tone, didn’t stay up quite as late, but still had so many moments feeling utterly blissed out and deliriously happy — which goes to show just how much the place can do.

Agree about how amazing it is that you can have a totally different fest to everyone else — I didn’t see half the sets people are raving about .. no shame, pigs, viagra for me, but still don’t feel like I’ve missed out.

Early birds getting bought tomorrow. Tho I enjoyed green man, eotr is just another dimension for me. Genuinely magic.
