Frank Ocean is not far bigger than Bjork surely?

Yeah he is. No other artists transcends pop culture like him and appeals to fans of Rap, Rnb and Soul als well as Indieheads. He has massively grown since Blonde, mainly because it became apparent how influential he and his style had become.

I love Björk but her legacy status alone cannot make up for her hard-to-access recent material and the fact that she hardly appeals to younger audiences.

I dunno. He doesn't have a track record so far of headlining major European festivals and stadium gigs. Northside and Parklife and other middling festivals were on his last tour.

Bjork has been playing major stadia and festivals and for much longer.

I'm only talking about popularity here, not critical acclaim. And only in Europe.

On a separate note, I wonder whether Primavera turned to the Strokes when Nine Inch Nails pulled out and nabbed them ahead of Mad Cool.

Since Mad Cool and Bilbao have The Killers/Placebo, I can see Primavera and Mad Cool both announcing The Strokes later this month just like Arctic Monkeys in 2018.

There is only one problem.......The Strokes aren't a female headliner :P

It seems inevitable that the headliners will be mostly men this year. Julian Casablancas has long hair, does that partially count?

Maybe if they have >50% women on the bill, that fends off the accusation that the headliners are mostly men.

Well there will always be thos that nobody calculated with like Solange, Erykah Badu or Cardi B last year. Think noone had expected them.

Yeah, we've always had unexpected headliners and can't believe there isn't one that we are not yet aware of, almost certainly female. (to just have Lana Del Rey really does look tokenistic).

that's true but IMO mainly because Frank apparently hates touring/performing, he cancelled most of the gigs scheduled for his last EU tour, otherwise he would be at the top even at the biggest festivals.

im from hungary and here he's almost completely unknown, but im sure the western part of europe adores him and he would fill any venue there - taken he's willing to go up to the stage

We shouldn't forget that this is ultimately a festival where Spanish people represent 50% of the audience and, frankly, I have no idea about his popularity there.

@Gnarler or anyone else in Spain, how popular is he?

It's hard to say tbh. I'm English and surround myself with Expats so all sorts of nationalities. Catalans are very homogeneous in my opinion and like to listen to Catalan or English music.

On the other hand, the under-30s of Barcelona are extremely artsy and adore him. I think if he were to announce a show in the city he'd play the biggest venue (17,000, apart from the olympic stadium) and sell it out eventually.

Cool, thanks.

I like him, but i am not a "big fan" I guess.
But I can also stress this: He is the epicentre of contemporary pop culture. He is not only critically acclaimed, but also highly popular amongst several age groups and is accessible to people who normally don't listen to rap. His aesthetics, fashion and style are solidifying him in pop culture beyond his musical work. His socio-political relevance with his topics about queerness, frail maculinity and loneliness in the post-modern world resonate perfectly with so many people, especially young urban audiences, which is exactly the core-crowd at Primavera.

The modern music world is continously building into a genreless eclecticism that no other artist represents as well as Frank Ocean.

Very well put. He is absolutely huge.

Can't disagree, I'm just out of touch.

Frank is bigger than Bjork. Bjork can't headline Coachella in 2020. The rarity of his show also makes it a bigger deal. Drake is arguably the biggest artist in the world and got booed off stage because people thought he was gonna be Frank Ocean even though that was never announced.

Yeah, and on top of that Drake is Big in another way. He has countless of streaming optimized songs, that cater to the short attention span of a background music clientele. Frank Oceans music has a lot more depth and makes his fame more sustainable in the long term and more immune to shifts in trends.

Frank Ocean is not just his music but he also has the power of a persona, I'd say

I hear you but Coachella is not the yardstick.

This is a European festival not a US one. There are plenty of acts that are huge in Europe and not in the US and vice versa.

You're right about 'rarity value' for sure e.g. Portishead and Daft Punk become bigger acts with every passing year they don't play.

Imagine if Frank isn't on the line up, after all this discussion.

I’m being very wary of getting excited about him being there, 1. In case he isn’t announced at all, and 2. Because of what happened last time he was announced. No excitement until he’s on that stage.

The "F*** Frank Ocean" T-shirt sellers are on standby and hoping for a big payday.

true, i feel almost the same, expected the 2017 prima knowing that he'd be there and then had to face the fact shortly before that he wont come.

i trust that he'll come though, he fucked the organisers so deep by pulling off in the last moment that he really "owes" a gig. and i think there wont be any last minute cancellations now that he's officially at coachella
