I'm starting to think I'm a bit of an obsessive with running which is somewhat healthy but also not as I regularly have to work on my muscles to make sure I'm not injuring myself! Back on furlough here so I'm trying to give myself a purpose.

I'd embrace it while you've it - it's possible you won't have it forever (going from experience!).

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a few runs now since our quarantine ended.

Good news - not suffering any fatigue effects or anything like that.

Bad news - that means that my wheezing and spluttering is down to having lost a ton of fitness since December and I'm just a bit of a fat knacker at the moment 😂

Great that you appear to not have 'long Covid' and the fitness will come back! I'm fairly sure you would still beat me in a run. I'm halfway through my target of running 100km in January and I'm beginning to crack 😂.

Bless you. Really think you're overestimating my fitness though!

All depends on the run I guess. You'd absolutely smash me over 5km and probably 10km at the moment. Maybe I'd have an edge over longer or in the hills just because I've done more of it.

I'm not trying to do it all at once at the moment, just incremental bits.  First thing was doing the 10-15 minutes headspace every day, which I've built into routine. Currently targeting a run as soon as I finish work every day (haven't decided about weekend yet!). Once that's bedded in I think it'll be working in yoga/pilates a few times a week.

Not worrying too much about getting back into a weight training routine yet as I'm going to be decorating and flooring the garage, then investing in a bit more kit. Not going to be back in the gym any time soon!

Been exercising but really been letting myself down on the cardio front. Not finding the weather too tempting! Was going to get on my wife's Les Mills carido workouts, but just got an even better solution (looks like I'm going on 50/50 furlough for a bit, so plenty of time to get running and cycling!).

Also, this looks like a good idea:

I've been watching The World's Toughest Race on PrimeTV and it is incredibly inspiring! Hosted by Bear Grylls and definitely worth a watch.

Has anyone on here done any adventure racing or anything like it?

Pencilled a novice one in for 2022 in Ireland, seems easy enough but a nice mix of running, hiking, cycling and kayaking!

Not exactly an endurance race, but this is the UK's biggest obstacle race FYI. I just did the 15 miles and 250 obstacles and it was a good laugh as you do it with your mates. Also, it is the only that has a big party at the end of it (we saw Dave Pearce). People were coming from all over Europe for it. You can also keep going around and go 30 or 60 miles if you want!

@Superscally is yer man for mental running. Proper tapped that one. Like, Marathon des Sables mental.

Someone on here was stepping up to (I think) ultra marathons. Think it might have been @Hugh Jass or @SwedgeAntillesbut can't remember for certain. Think there was one down on the jurassic coast someone was looking at?

I've done a couple of TAB events, so military-style cross country runs with loaded bergens. Debating a triathlon at some point.

Have you got the link for the one you're signed up for? Always interesting to see how other people are planning to hurt themselves!

I started doing the perfect push up thing but managed to injure myself so having a week off.  Luckily it's not impacted on running so that's just going to head out now so I'm allowed to have a drink later.

Managed a half marathon distance last year so looking to up that to 30k this year but absolutely need to get into Yoga.  I'm an absolute joke as when I try to touch my toes can only get to the middle of my shins.

OK I'll def try and dial in then 😄

Decided that even if events are cancelled this year I'm still going to build a training calendar around the events I would have been doing so I've got something to work to.  First one is a half marathon in March, should have been in the Forest of Dean but don't see that happening.

Strictly speaking if I want to properly replicate my training pattern I need to fit in getting injured at rugby somewhere around the end of the month as well but might give that a miss this year 😂

This is the one I had a look at:

https://extremenorthevents.com/tuff-inish-adventure-race-course-details/

Plenty of options and I'd probably just go with the Novice one for a first time! I do a lot of hiking and have ran a marathon before (although it was nearly 10 years ago now!) so I think the Novice one should be doable without too much work.

That looks amazing!!! Need to see if I can find anything like that on the mainland!

Certainly wasn’t me matey. My fitness levels have dropped shockingly over the last few months. Used to be able to run a half marathon most weekends, struggling to dk half that right now.

Unsure if this is the best place to ask, but does anyone have any idea how much a fully functional home gym would cost and does anyone have any experience with one? I'd probably need a bench, a power rack, lat pull down machine perhaps and then dumbbells up to say 40kg (maybe 10kg increments?).

Would you be after a barbell and plates as well?

Yeah ideally. I'd probably get 2 of each (i.e. 2 20s, 2 10s, 2 5s). I'm just thinking of ideas longer-term as I am looking to buy a house and thinking what I could do in the unlikely event I had money left over from the deposit!

It'll depend on the usual stuff, what quality you want, whether you want new or second hand etc. But based on what I've looked up when I've had similar ideas you'll almost certainly be looking at 4 figures for the sort of kit you're talking about. But then depending on where you go it means you're not spending out on gym membership.

This is a decent site to start on to give yourself a few ideas

Cheers! As I say, just a brief thought at the minute and will definitely need to look into it further. I am struggling for motivation during this lockdown with my home workouts (with resistance bands/barbell/dumbbell) so that doesn't bode overly well for a home gym...

I know the feeling! The other way to look at it is starting with the minimum you need for a workout and building up your kit from there. Like a monthly magazine that builds to a scale model of the titanic 😄

Unsure what it is about this lockdown compared to the previous 2, especially as you would think it is hopefully the last! Perhaps I'm just fed up of working out in a cold garage using a painter's bench as a bench with weights you have to unscrew for minutes at a time to add 2.5kg 😄
