Don’t actually think this is good news but look what’s just appeared in our area. It’s the dark giant horsefly, the heaviest fly in Europe. Fearsome and doesn’t bite like other insects, it tears the skin.  Prefers horses but will bite humans . God news is it usually only appears in August/ September

I once found one of these in my kitchen. Its an Elephant Hawk Moth and they like to feed on the nectar of honeysuckle, which I have outside my kitchen window. it was absolutely beautiful and I gently caught it and directed it back outside.

I bloody hate horseflies. Like Chris says, whereas normal insect bites are like an injection with a little anaesthetic so you won't actually notice until after they've fed, those bastards just saw into your skin and start drinking. Absolute fuckers they are. Hurt like an absolute bitch, and a but more prone to infection.

I'm a peaceful man by nature and try to direct things away rather than kill them, but fuck those guys.

A very apt and accurate description worthy of David Attenborough,  and having been bitten by horseflys on a few occasions I can confirm they are nasty and infect easily.

I once spent about a week working in some woods and we were absolutely plagued by horse flies - horrible creatures without a single redeeming feature.

I’ve managed to relax and chill with my first pub visit since March .... shit I’ve just bumped into a lamp post :(

Strange thing to bump into at night time , Don’t lampposts have big lights at the top of them? 😁, hope you had a good time at the pub.

hope shines brightest in the dark!

I used to work in an office that seemed to attract these buggers. We were in a conservatory that got really hot in the summer and we had to keep the windows and doors closed/put up that magnetic fly netting. They still got in.

I was once stung by a horse fly in France. It got into our caravan and was hiding under a t-shirt i'd thrown on the floor when I stepped on it - oouuucch the pain. It just felt like burning.

After a few days my Mum thought I was still over-doing it a bit with the pain. The next day we went out for a canoe on the lake. Me and Dad in one, Mum and brother in the other. At one point Dad and I turned around to see my Mum slumped over like she'd fainted, with her arm trailing in the water. Turned out she'd hit another one of the buggers on her oar, and it had taken it's own back on her hand.

She didn't think I was overdoing it again.

These horsefly bite/sting/skin tear stories don't seem like good news to me

I think one of these got me through the back of my sun lounger in the garden, I felt it straight away then turned to look and it flew away, one got my husband too .... we weren't sure what they were and just called them "big meanies"

That sounds like an apt name, albeit less sweary than my preferred option

Can we rename this the "Horselfy Horror Stories Thread"?
