So we're going to have a digital pound, don't see the point of it as it'll be fully exchangeable for paper money, doesn't achieve anything that you can't do already with the digital representation of a quid in your bank account.

The key will be how it evolves. It will start off that way but programmable money is really a holy grail for central banks as it will allow targeting of specific parts of the economy. Interest rate rises/cuts are more like taking a cleaver to the economy whilst programable money would be more like a scalpel. Money can be created to target specific parts of the economy and then be written to disappear. For example, the car scrappage scheme in 2009, central banks could add £10k to everyone's account which can only be spent on a new car and has to be spent by x day or it disappears.

Governments could also do the same thing with say unemployment benefits, program them so they can't be spent on beer and fags etc..

well I'm going to call them credits.

They won't be giving you freebies whatever they're called, cos they are convertible to real money.

Yeah I can see how that would be useful.  I must of read about ten articles on the subject and none of them came up with decent examples of how this might be used.

It can't be targeted as lost suggests because its all convertable to sterling.

That's still convertability.

Yes for a limited period of time. Like currently you can use the old stamps and the new bar coded stamps then at a period of time in the future you have to use the new bar coded stamps.

good grief, Cleese is going to make a new Fawlty Towers...

Just noticed the pic on the beeb article and that he was 35 when it started. What the hell were people doing to themselves in the 70's?
