Fair enough. Imagine if Starmer had said they would spend, the media would jump on that too. They canโ€™t win either way.ย

They have to increase taxes or increase borrowing or cut spending in real terms. This is the current state of Govt finances after the autumn statement. The growth they need wont come without more invesrment and reforms. Talking about non doms and stopping tax abuse won't get them through an election campaign. The areas left open are borrowing to invest and increasing taxes on wealth and capital gains.

You are right they had already committed to do that.ย  This is about the application of it not the overall principle.ย

think the rebels thought the overall principle might be under threat.

You really don't know what you are talking about Stevie...

Many industries have been absolutely overloaded over the couple of years with cheap foreign labour because Boris allowed them to have a 20% on the threshold.ย  Its pretty much wrecked the employment market in many industries like technology.ย  You could basically bring someone into the country, with all their dependents on a salary of just ยฃ26k which is desperately low and causes huge problems for UK workers.ย  Only benefits corporations wanting to drive down wages.

You have been indoctrinatedย to think immigration on mass is required for health sector while ignoring the damage done to other industries the average UK workers salary last couple of years.

You are basically screaming out to protect the profits of big companies without realising you are doing.

These changes are backed by most decent tories and labour.ย ย

Itโ€™s been a race to the bottom for a while.ย  Don't support it.ย ย

Itโ€™s clearly low and not enough for most to live on but is ยฃ26k that different to the average โ€˜shop floorโ€™ worker nowadays?ย

What is the average salary in the UK?

In April 2022, the median gross annual pay in the UK was ยฃ27,756.

What is the average salary in England?

In April 2022, the median gross annual pay in England was ยฃ28,000.

the big uptick of those coming in with work visas since 2022 is down to health/social care workers...so not sure this salary cap affects many of those, but this dependents ruling will.

As a Northerner who grew up in Thatchers era Iโ€™ve witnessed firsthand the effects of the mines being shut not that long after the closure of the mills ย

She is a hated figure up here still but she knew changes had to be made, the mining era had to end at some point. My city changed from being a centre of the wool trade to a telecoms hub in the 80s ย

The old mining towns are still feeling the effects even though theyโ€™re now becoming commuter hubs for those working in the city. Itโ€™s only the older generations still being bitter.

Yes, there was light at the end of the tunnel for those communities. 30 years later they were to become hollowed out commuter towns whose utility is measured in how close they are to the motorway. Brilliant. Thanks Maggie!

I wonder if Olaf Scholtz mentioned how much meaningful change the fella with the moustache made ahead of his election campaign.ย

discuss.

After Wilders won, I was actually thinking if Le Pen wins in France and AFD make inroads in Germany we could see a scenario in the future where the right in the UK want to re-join and the left stay out.

The economy didn't crash, Covid covered up the short term economic damage and the EU also has slow growth at the moment. Low paid workers have seen pay rises above minimum wage , small export businesses have lost trade. Otherwise most people are unaffected. Going forward we've just rejoined Horizen and there'll probably be other deals to mutually recognise standards etc. Most people just aren't bothered and they don't want another big national arguement about it.

there's a lot of social care visas being issued to non-social care workers - its being used as a scam somehow, not sure how, it might be other job applicants putting social care as they think a visa is more likely.
