It's a small stock market tracker where fees ate into it. For some people gambling with other people's money is a guaranteed win.

These are just your bad choices though. Investing in a basic global index fund over the same period would have returned tens of thousands.

My bad choice was believing the bullshit in the first place and handing over my money for greedy geezers to spunk on them selves.

you never needed a financial adviser to invest 3k. just cause you made an error doesn't somehow make the stock market a bad thing to invest in

Christ, some people here need to understand the definition of financial advice a bit more. Fray, correctly, pointing out that SIPPs are one of (if not the most) tax-efficient methods of saving is not financial advice.

Financial advice is having the facts of someone's financial situation and advising them on what they should do with those finances.

If you know of anyone selling stock market investment plans who isn't an FA then they're a fraud and acting illegally

Look up ISA millionaires for God's sake.

Tangentially, defined benefit pension schemes f**ked us all over. Once we get past the debt of those, pensions might actually get to a decent place again (am I being too optimistic? Probably.)

It’s always worth getting proper professional advice before making any investment decision!

You do know that you can go to nearly any banks site and invest in a share ISA . Many investment platforms you can also do the same.

Maybe depends on your definition of FA.

Nobody needs to be involved in any of this process.

step 1) open an account with vanguard or any other company who does this stuff

step 2) open a stocks and shares isa and invest in an index fund preferably a globalised one

step 3) invest X amount each month

simple

You just can’t admit you don’t know something about a subject so always need to stick your beak in

People acting like I’m a snake oil salesman for suggesting investing money when you’re young and doing it consistently in an isa or pension can make you wealthy in retirement 😂 the people in this thread are mad.

Absolutely mental. Usual suspects though. They think they've got it all sussed out.

This was back long  before high street banks got involved with easy stock market investing The world of investments has changed hugely in the last thirty years.

So annoyed with myself for not taking this seriously when I was younger. I do now, and am making a real effort but missed out on so much and am just playing catchup. I genuinely think I thought I wouldn't make it to pension age! Seemed so far away, my dad died when I was 19 (and he was 53) and my lifestyle was very much leading me down the same path. But then I only bloody went and got healthy in my 40s didn't I. Bloody idiot. Really complicated things!

I'd already got better with this stuff years before then but honestly, not at a high enough level and when it occurred to me I might actually live long enough to need a pension now I massively upped my contributions. I was already pretty good at saving) But it would have been so much better and easier just to start earlier.

I'm like a pensions Jacob Marley with the younger staff at work now. Hopefully auto-enrolment is making a difference. I know the base level is very low but at least it's something

helps if work for a company that does these pension things where you contribute and they match it or whatever...and I think most do this now (they have to?). I certainly wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

Ah you were talking about the olden days, you hadn't made that clear.
