Yes but there will be people there who went primarily to see rage, then when they cancelled and got replaced by the 1975, they might have decided to give them a listen. Then to hear your favourite band talked about in that way is going to make you think “this guy is a c***” and leave

If you can’t take a joke or a snide comment (which it wasn’t) about your favourite band and you then leave in a huff then I don’t quite know what to say. I agree with @Andre91 in that me and my friends also saw the funny side of it despite wishing it were RATM up there and not The 1975.

Quick roundup from Reading

Friday

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes - Decent start to the weekend, few mates had never listened before and thought they were great, +1 for Frank getting totally butt naked on the main stage 7/10

The Scratch - Sat down in the tent to escape the sun, enjoyed it and had the crowd dancing throughout 6/10

All Time Low - Unexpectedly a massive highlight for me and my friend group! Setlist could have been better but was great fun dancing around in the pit 8/10

Priestgate - We'd been joking around after listening to one song by them basically on repeat since the Wednesday and enjoyed them! Did not expect the frontman's moves 7/10

Cleopatrick - Stumbled in on the end and enjoyed the last 3/4 songs! Got a decent sized crowd for the FR stage too 7/10

As It Is - Another decent set, came in with average expectations but thoroughly enjoyed, another one where my group hadn't listened to them but enjoyed! 7/10

The Interrupters - Pleasant surprise when sat in the campsite when this appeared on the app, pretty small crowd but good set, 'oldest' crowd of the weekend I saw! 6/10

Fever 333 - Love this band but not at their best, sound wasn't great, pit wasn't that full and regret not seeing Dave afterwards 5/10

Saturday

Poppy - Sat at the back of the field, definitely an interesting watch! 6/10

AJ Tracey - Was hoping for the band from Glastonbury which would have been far better, decent but could have been far better 6/10

Enter Shikari - Biggest disappointment of the weekend for me, love the band but performance felt average, setlist was meh and the cutting off due to the "power cut" was a shame 5/10

Fontaines D.C - Sat at the back again but we all ended up turning to watch, great energy and good tunes! 7/10

Pendulum - Great set, stayed for about 6 songs but was so glad it was a live set and had never got the chance to see them! Left early to get a spot for BMTH 8/10

Bring Me The Horizon - Incredible set, one of the best times I've seen them and were a step up from everyone else I watched over the weekend 10/10

Arctic Monkeys - Dull, didn't seem to want to be there, setlist average, group all agreed it wasn't great, they have amazing songs but live after seeing BMTH, fell completely flat 4/10

Sunday

Denzel Curry - Good stuff, crowd very into it, shame no Rage cover but good fun 7/10

100 Gecs - Such an odd vibe, seemed quite quiet but front half of the crowd was into it 6/10

Pale Waves - Came in with mid expectations, blew it out of the water! Superb set in the sun! 9/10

DMA's - Sat at the back of the field half listening, tunes all sound pretty similar 6/10

Run The Jewels - One of my favourites, managed to get pretty close without even trying, setlist could be better and knowing Zach from Rage would probably have come out made me sad 7/10

Beabadoobee - Sat on the edge of the tent, good energy and some great songs, big crowd for the stage too 7/10

Charli XCX - A weird one, great fun and the most party like crowd of the weekend, but half of it was backing track, enjoyed though 7/10

The 1975 - Superb set, we waited in the area after Charli for food and drinks to get in the front section. Banger after banger, Matty is a muppet but it just sorta works, came in thinking this'll be alright but ended the festival brilliantly 9/10

Highlights: BMTH, The 1975, watching fence-hoppers get caught in the campsite, the weather, getting a hotel on the last night

Lowlights: Camping so far away despite arriving at 2pm on the Wednesday, Shikari disappointing, showers in White not open after 7:30am on Friday until the Sunday (due to a fire, irony!)

Would have soured the performance though for some people. Rage fans were giving them a chance and thats exactly not what to say - i'm pretty neutral on who i'd like to see more but its very easy to understand the frustration in my eyes.

Flip me, are you Rage fans still moaning about what Matt 'ego manic' Healy said at Leeds?

It's been like 5 days now, time to move on. It was a wee joke said by a notorious shit talker, really isn't this deep. I'd foolishly assumed Rage fans would have thicker skin but seem to be the biggest bunch of moaners over the past few weeks.

I saw them open for Muse at London Stadium in 2019 and do recall them being really cool at that show. But I do hear they've picked up as a live act since. Maybe worth a visit for their next main tour? (I gather they did one in Feb)

On tour again in November. They were great when I saw them in Feb but subpar at Community festival (but think they were jet-lagged had flown from the US like the day before).

Hey, if you have seen my post on the last page, the 1975 are my favourite band I’ve seen them over 10 times, I'm just seeing it from a rage point of view!

Seems like everyone that saw bmth have them as their highlight. So good to see a band I first saw with 20 other people at the start when their live performances were not so great to now being one of the best live bands in the world is so inspiring

They are one of the few bands I see on every tour as they just seem to get better and better

Are people serious? Do you actually think The 1975 guy was slagging Rage off? Listen to the clip. Comment is near the beginning.

Get your ears cleaned, he's saying nobody can be Rage, like nobody can replace them. Literally calls them  "the greatest rock band of the previous generation". It's as if people who were offended by this just read it in a newspaper. How are we still discussing this?

It really shows that some rock/metal fans can be the biggest bunch of humourless dorks going. ‘We’re the most inclusive* fan base’… are you bollocks 😂

From the Download faithful constantly berating any booking they see as being ‘unworthy’, to loads of RATM fans misinterpreting something the singer of The 1975 said as being a slight against your precious band (who haven’t been arsed to make any new music for over two decades but will happily milk the cash cow every few years), it’s laughable. You look really, really stupid.

I’m being massively facetious here because I class myself as a massive metal head but, Christ, get a fucking grip. I hope you get a burning feeling in your stomach and get the sweats every time you see/hear about The 1975 from now on 😄

* a quick note on inclusivity: R&L attendees shit all over DL’s. We had a conversation about this on the DL forums and those of us at R&L this year never received any negative comments for wearing band tees, wearing black, having lots of tattoos etc. but I can guarantee that I will revive snarky comment after comment whenever I go to Download about whether I’m a drug dealer for wearing a bucket hat and bumbag (a fucking Slayer bumbag, at that) or laughed at and told that I ‘belong at Reading’. I was cutting about the campsite at Leeds in a Darkthrone tee this past weekend and the only comment I got was ‘that’s a cool logo’ from some kid who was listening to AJ Tracey outside his tent. UP THE YOOF.

I don't think anyone will have left in a huff!

Just people thinking he came across as a bit of a dick, which he is!

To be fair, watching it back you can tell he isn’t slagging them off! Thanks for sharing it

Hilariously, after Matty did the COVID’ ‘SNOT’ ‘REAL’ thing, some people pushed past us with their middle fingers in the air saying ‘what fucking shit band pricks’.

I was amused

What is this nonsense. Alcohol kills plenty of people. It's way past time we got past the all drugs are evil, except alcohol attitude and started seriously educating the young.

So many predicting Muse but I really can’t see them headlining when they’ve got stadium shows and the MK bowl date. R&L don’t usually have headliners playing other summer shows especially when they’re that big. Biggest rock/indie band will probably be MCR or The Killers.
