Thanks for all the Springsteen reviews. I'm a big fan and saw my first show in '92. This is the first tour that I have not been excited for. Quite simply, the cost of being in the pit at Hyde Park is shocking. I think if the reports were that the shows were mind-blowing I'd be getting more into it, but the word coming back is that this is not Bruce at his best. Add to that the predictability of the setlists, and it feels like a lot of what made Bruce and E Street so great in the past has ebbed away somewhat. I am certain that this will be the last ESB tour so part of me wants to catch them one final time but now I dunno...

Went to the Eurovision Semi Final 1 afternoon show on tuesday at Liverpool Arena. Was amazed at how small the arena was compared to Brum's massive caverns. We were sitting near the back row near the back but I didn't feel that far away. Pretty quick to get served even if the queues are long. Pre-poured pints of wet labelled merely 'lager'* and 'cider' and no option of a double pint kept things moving.

Walking in took my breath away. The stage and the pods resplendent in LED's were awesome. We got in with 2 minutes left on the countdown - just long enough for me to identify the three current members of ex-Bucks Fizz (it's complicated) by the back of their heads. The showrunner introduced himself, told us to be quiet for the respectful intro video and performance, and we were off.

Being the afternoon run-through show the presenters dressed down, and their interview segments involved runners in place of the talent, but all the performances were exactly how they were on the broadcast show. Graham Norton took a seat in time to watch Ireland rock the room in a genuinely decent performance (between his massive camel hoof and his confused face, it fell flat on the tv). Later they interviewed former eurovis failure and Irish tv mainstay Dustin the Turkey. As he exited his scene he was clumsily bundled into a box while runners blocked sightlines to his handler - a man who was then escorted from the arena hidden under a black shroud. I think they used to do the same to Prince back in the day.

Crowd was mixed between those that had been following everything and people who had come because they fancied a bit of Eurovision - something they got in the madcap Croatian entry, who blistered a cold room inside of 3 minutes.

The amount of people that went for a wazz and a beer about 30 seconds before Loreen's performance gave me anxiety.

A top tier performance but lacking somewhat behind Kaarija for Finland. He got a healthy amount of cheers initially but by the end it was clear who the room's winner was as the crowd came unglued. Every mention of him after, in 'call this number to vote' videos and the like, earned rapturous whooping, even when he was voted through in the mock qualifier at the end.

Glad I finally got to be part of Eurovision.

 

*I did ask what the lager was and was told San Miguel. But imagine not advertising that fact?

Caught Joe Bonamassa last night. Great for those who like their solos big and long and extravagant, with some excellent guitar tones throughout.

I'd be quietly curious to wonder why he hasn't ended up at Glastonbury yet. I assume it is likely a price matter, but an early Saturday slot on the Pyramid - think fifth or sixth down - would likely play gangbusters in the sunshine.

Yep, Tim has got a fever. Just need to hope the re-arranged date is kind. They are playing in Bristol on the Glasto Friday, so there must be a chance they'll re-schedule around that date.

That is my worry and I will not be able to see them. Guess it depends on Forum dates they have

Got to see The Allergies last Thursday in Bristol. Brilliant night. Support was Boca 45 on the decks playing 7"'s always great fun and had the crowd grooving.

The Allergies were just energy from start to finish. Had the 3 people from the new album, Andy Cooper is great fun and at times such a fast rapper, Marietta Smith on vocals and what a voice with James Morton on Sax. Danced and Danced. Such a good night. Sadly not doing the farm as they lose money on it and can not afford that. Got my vinyl signed with Andy saying what I have written will make sense after 2 weeks. He wrote Romans  8 18-23

Those are just regular gigs and this was part of the orchestra tour - given how different the shows are I expect they'll want to match like-for-like, so I'd expect rescheduled dates to be around 10 or 23 July which are when they're doing festival shows with the orchestra.

Sorry meant the forum in Bath. See when they have a slot for James, yet to see what that venue looks like, but yea later on I hope

Yeah, I meant the Bristol gig is a regular standing James gig. They'll be wanting to rearrange this all-seated gig as an orchestra date if at all possible, so it'll likely fit in with the couple of orchestra dates they have in the summer.

Saw The Lathums last night (who were brilliant!), they had a Q&A before the gig and were asked if they were playing Glastonbury and they could neither confirm or deny it. I expect that means they'll be there 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾

Beyonce at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff last night. Naturally new album heavy (no bad thing), but what a show. Ridiculous stage setup and production, 2 1/2 hour, 33-song set list. Seriously, Glastonbury getting her 12 years ago(!) was a coup. What a woman.

They always seem to tour the UK around now and then late summer - never here around Glasto time. They would be crazy good in Woodsies or Park

at a Napalm Death gig last year i was standing at the back enjoying a beer and watching the show (which had been my plan for the evening) when suddenly after a couple of songs my heart had the idea of "what the hell are you doing, get in there!".

one mosh pit and much stagediving later, i was a wreck.

every gig i've been to since then i've made myself stand back and enjoy from afar.

mosh pit + old age = ouch.

Def Leppard with Motley Crue at Brammal Lane, Sheffield 22.05.23

First band on was Vivas at the dinner-bothering time of 5:45pm. One of the members is the son of Leppard's bass player, so I doubt we missed anything worth seeing. We got through the turnstiles as their set was closing. Toilets and bars were rammed unless you had the foresight to walk 30 seconds to the next, empty ones. The bar at the back of the pitch provided instant beer purchasing throughout this monday night.

The atmosphere in the stadium was near terminal as the crowd listened to 70's parish hall favourites such as Brand New Cadillac and Leo Sayer's 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing'. When Motley Crue took the stage an assault of drum and bass rattled the chest, while cupping an ear allowed one to hear the squeaks of miniature frontman Vince Neil. Murky and muddy, songs unrecognisable until the chorus hit, the only thing worth paying attention to was the Crue's 2 dancers.


Halfway through Tommy Lee (the absolute spitting image of modern day Fatima Whitbread) came out from behind the skins to politely ask the audience to show their breasts. A few shoulder-hoisted women obliged for the big screens, which mustered a few soft cheers, but it was more sad than raucously debauched, the awkwardness outweighing any titillation. This would oddly be the prelude to the saccharine power ballad Home Sweet Home.

People used to say Motley Crue looked like girls. Now they look like nans in fancy dress.

Def Leppard came out strong and were relentless. 6 songs from Hysteria punctuated with their other hits that were somehow even bigger.

Sound was quality, and both lead guitars sounded wicked. Lovely to see a band of this ilk still blasting it out, even if no one was up to doing a starjump off the drum riser. A fair amount of the crowd seemed to come here just for the opportunity to sit and be quiet, but Pour Some Sugar On Me was the one to finally pull them up by the ears.



No encore or anything specific to this homecoming gig - likely a condition of their co-head tour with the Crue - the set was over a neat 90 minutes after starting.
