No, not just a personal thing. The reviews for Little Simz have been astonishing. Phenomenal reviews. I’ve never seen reviews like it. I think everyone at Alexandra Palace realised they’d seen something very special that night.

I know she’s good live, I’ve seen her, and is critically acclaimed. She just isn’t that big. She’s only had one single that’s actually charted (Introvert got to #11). That’s nowhere near Pyramid headliner form. I see her more occupying the space where the likes of Portishead or Massive Attack can - big cult following and a solid choice to headline one of the other stages, and smaller festivals

Saw The Murder Capital at Liverpool Invisible Wind Factory at the weekend. Reeeeaaaaaallllly good. I've somehow managed to miss them up until now but man, they're good.

Support came from Teeth Machine who were decent. Couple of tech issues but they created an interesting sound. Worth a listen.

Saw QOTSA in Manc. Setlist lacked a lot faster, heavier tracks, and they seemed to never really gather momentum. Missing so many hits from the past in favour of stuff from the past ten years and new album makes me think they really have changed for good. They sounded great and are all incredibly talented, stage set up was a bit bland (just static lights) and the crowd seemed to react well. Just some poor setlist choices and omissions kinda bummed me out.

The Chats and Deep Tan supported. Both good at what they do, especially The Chats, but the crowd didn't seem too interested.

Interesting. Their Piece Hall show in Fax was a proper mishmash, missing a fair few biggies, but it probably is up there for my best gig post-Covid.

I was there as well. Played 5 of the new album (which is  understandable as the tour for it) other than that only 1 track from Villans so more than half was over 10 years 

They smashed out 4 tracks each from Like Clockwork & Songs For The Death which are the probably the two most popular albums  

They played the bigger hits of the other albums. 

Only real big hits I can think that they didnt play were Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret & FGHOTS. But you can't have them all everytime. 

So I would say very well put together setlist with the understanding that it will lean towards the album they are touring.

Saw Billy Bragg at Portsmouth Guildhall last night. I've seen him here and there since the mid 90s but for me last night's show was the best. Great setlist and I loved the stories in between. He could easily just churn out the hits after 40 years but instead the passion, anger and humour sets him apart from the rest. I don't listen to his albums that often, but I realised last night how many of his lyrics have permanent residence in my head instead of 'more important' stuff like birthdays and names :-) 

I liked the compilation film of his 40 year career instead of a support act, although it really hit home how much has (and sadly hasn't) changed in that time. It was also nice not being the oldest person in the crowd for change 🙂

I do like a support slot that's filled by something a little unusual. At the opposite end of socialist principles, KISS - I did say opposite end - had a painter on before their UK shows in 2019. That was different.

Tom McGuire & The Brassholes last night at Thekla, Bristol.

sh*t hot funk and a great party vibe. They played the festival last year but something like at 3 in the m orning at the West Holts bar, so maybe they'd be back next year. Anyway, well worth your time. So f**king rad!

It was kind of splatter portraits of famous musical faces, usually accompanied to a thumping rock soundtrack over the PA system. It was intriguing in a way; a different kind of talent.

I would like to see this happen more often!

Many moons ago I saw Prophets Of Da City play and during their set a couple of graffiti artists decorated the backdrop of the stage with a mural which they finished at the last song, which was nice. I seem to remember a skate ramp and some skateboarders on stage too - this may all have been a fever dream though, my 1990s were very misspent 🙂

That's exactly the kind of DIY element that can make some shows absolutely pop. Don't get me wrong, I love a bombastic stadium rock set - I am a Bruce Springsteen fan after all - and a slick arena show is as much of a treat when you've got the songs. But something outside the box like that can be tip-top.

Finally got to see The Sisters of Mercy, at the Bristol Marble Factory last night. Mixture of songs from their 3 studio albums, quite a few ‘new’, unreleased tracks and a few others too. Way overdue a slot on the farm

The Levellers had a bloke come onstage who kicked himself in the face after the crowd donated enough money to a good cause. Added a nice touch to the show

Saw the Prodigy at AO Arena in Manchester last night. My first time at that venue, found it pretty soulless, like most arenas. 42nd time seeing the band. After seeing them a few times since his passing, I've come to the conclusion that they do miss Keef, but the show is still as ferocious as ever. I'm not quite sure Maxim fully carries them but of course they give it everything, as they always have. They've upped the production values a fair bit and gone a bit nuts with the lasers and they've ramped up the Flinty tribute midway through. My only slight disappointment is them not switching up the setlist at all. Pretty much the same one since the return shows from last summer.

I agree with your points though I really enjoyed it and everyone I saw was throwing shapes.

I've seen them about 20 times and this was much better than last time I saw them at the Manchester Apollo in 2017 when I thought they lacked e energy. 

I think they would put on a great performance on the Other Stage?

That's one to think on - the worst-lit gig you've ever been to.

I saw Hugh Cornwell in The Cockpit a dozen years ago, and that was just dire all around, but the lighting in particular made no sense.
