Watching the Roy Orbison tribute on BBC2 at the moment.  The Travelling  Wilburys, now that would have been a legendary act!  Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty.

Not sure how feasible this would be - believe a few of them are no longer with us unfortunately 😬

Didn't catch Bob as wasn't there that year, caught the end of Jeff Lynne and seemed good to me?

98 was my first Glastonbury. I was so stoked to see Bob Dylan all weekend. His well known songs were unrecognisable, his lyrics (arguably his main selling point) were indecipherable. It's fair to say it was the most disappointing festival set I've ever seen!

I saw him again in Hyde Park in 2019 (I only went for Neil Young) and it was almost as bad, so I realise that's par for the course for a Dylan gig now.

He has gone a bit Tom Waits vocally for sure

I think the use of the past tense is the giveaway in that post… 🤦‍♂️

Yes, would have are the crucial words!
I know Jeff Lynne gets stick for the ELO legend spot  but I can’t help thinking the mud, drizzle and overcast conditions put a bit of a dampener on the set, especially Mr Blue Sky. 😉

The big issue on here seems to be his lack of personality. My main concern is great songs performed brilliantly - which he did. If you get a bit of banter thrown in, then that's a lovely bonus - but not crucial to a great performance. Neil Young barely says a word, but he's still the greatest live performer I've ever seen.

Decided to see if Chat GPT could answer our question about the legend slot this year. At least it was honest.

As a language model AI, I don't have any information on who is playing at Glastonbury this year as my training data only goes up until 2021, and I don't have the ability to predict future events. The lineup for Glastonbury is usually announced closer to the festival dates, and you can check the festival's official website or social media accounts for the most up-to-date information.

Absolutely. Keeps the quota balanced.

im getting genuinely puddled now. I expect the tabloids to go all hysterical if/when it’s all men on the top line. But a Glastonbury forum? Of all the f**king places where I’d have thought people would pay attention to what Emily Eavis says. Surely this is where what Emily Eavis (that’s Emily EAVIS) says would carry some weight.

But no. Only some of what she says is important and other stuff, well, let’s ignore that. FFS.

I don't think anyone is bothered by there being no female headliners for diversity's sake. It's just based on what Emily has said, clearly having all-male headliners would not be her first choice, and if that's what happens, it's an indication that at some point, something went wrong.

She literally said it could happen some years.

I asked it for a realistic mock up of 2023s line up, and it gave something with about 14 headliner size acts 😂

Could you ask it for examples of music legends still alive and touring?  Could give us some new leads 😄

Yes, but people like to snip that sentence out of the broader context of what she was saying. She goes on to say "but the aim is that you're conscious of that when you're booking". She's always going to try and not have 4 male headliners, it's just that some years it's not going to be possible. If AM/GNR/Elton are locked in she's absolutely going to gun for a female legend first.

I also asked who had been the best headliner. It's very much a fence sitter!

he title of "best headliner" at Glastonbury Festival is subjective and depends on personal opinions. Some of the most highly regarded headliners in the festival's history include:

  • David Bowie (2000)
  • Radiohead (1997, 2003, 2017)
  • Oasis (1994, 1995)
  • The Rolling Stones (2013)
  • Beyoncé (2011)
  • Coldplay (2002, 2005, 2011, 2016)
  • Arctic Monkeys (2013)

Keep in mind that the best headliner for one person may not be the same for another, as the experience of a live performance can be influenced by factors such as the weather, crowd, and individual preferences.
