The Weather Thread 2023

The thing with 2005 is that Wednesday and Thursday were absolutely roasting, so a lot of people had left wellies in the car (or not brought them) - I had a sodden walk out to the west car parks to grab mine while my girlfriend queued up to pay £40 for a pair of £10 wellies a size too big… Then by Sunday morning the sun was out and I remember sitting on the pyramid hill with an ice cream for Brian Wilson. It really was just that 3/4 hours on Friday that f**ked it. 95% warm and dry… apart from the biggest thunderstorm of the summer.

(Whereas 2007 was the opposite - 95% wet and cloudy with only a few brief sunny spells)

24 at Glastonbury is brutal

I'm always amazed at people who want "holiday in Spain" temperatures at a f**king massive festival.

Trekking around in that heat is absolutely horrendous. Sunburn at a festival is a pain in the ass, and your hangover is inescapable.

2011 was grim, just loads of people trying to find any bit of shade available (there isn't much).

Nice partial cloudy 17-20 all day long for me

Sunburn? If only there was something you could put on your skin to stop it burning. There’s a market there

As a whole '05 was a nicer experience than '07,

2007 didn’t have the photo op of the Pennards flood and the lads in the canoe by the upturned portaloos. It did have thin, knee-high sloshing mud in front of every outdoor stage, swirling winds that ruined the sound (and a tepid lineup, although this isn’t the thread for that). Anyone who went the distance at the 1am Bill Bailey outdoor standup set in the worst of the Sunday night rain wears a lifetime badge of festival honour.

The only miserable rain Ive been in at Glastonbury was after U2. It was windy & raining.

It was raining pretty hard, hard & lamping it down. No let up.

I watched the Lancashire hotpots in the Crossaint Neuf.

The other times it's rained have been enjoyable. I'll never understand anyone who doesnt like a dramatic storm. 2014 was brilliant.

I went to that Bill Bailey set after the Chemical Brothers…half way through I went into my waterproof jacket to get my fags and lighter out…it was raining, my waterproof had finally given up, my jeans and boxers were soaked….I opened my fag packet, the top of the packet fell off in the rain, my fags were wet and my lighter didn’t work…my pint of lager was getting rain water in it…was the end of the world..my mate and me looked at each other and just gave each other a look of ‘let’s give up and go back to the tents’

on our way back I stopped to get some doughnuts and as I went to pay I found in my wallet a neatly folded up £20 that was crisp dry as i unravelled it I found 1/2 gram of coke in its baggy completly rain free from the night before….I skipped with joy through the mud with my doughnuts for the last 10 mins of walking back to the tent!😂

During Tom Vek on the Other Stage on Friday morning in 2005 I had the only time of not wanting to be at Glastonbury. I can't remember how my day improved but I think it might have involved a pint. I just googled the line-up for the Other Stage that year - Friday evening was Bloc Party into Royskopp into FBS. Razorlight headlined Sat and Ian Brown Sun.

Oh my sweet Jesus.  The 12z GFS spells doom for the Thursday…. It has an exceptional low for the time of year sweeping across the country bringing heavy rain to all.  Followed by a cold northerly by the evening…. It traditionally overplays these low pressure systems, but still, it’s not a pretty sight.    But of course, it’s much too early!

Yes, that’s what the GFS does.    It toys with us.   Plays with our emotions.   And then at the last minute, gives us an Azores finger.

Not very accurate at all this far off. Check the day before and it MIGHT be right. But last year it was wrong even the days before! So basically it’s all pointless 😁

That’s not strictly true. Last year we dodged a bullet.  The models predicted showers last year, and as has been pointed out in this thread, several heavy showers passed very close to the site. We got lucky.  But the models can never and will never be able to predict where showers will fall to within a few miles.

At this range, 2 weeks out, the models can’t predict where rain will fall on any particular day, but they can identify a trend towards drier/wetter/hotter/colder weather…
