Its pretty funny that my normal attitude towards the World Cup of ignoring it and wishing it would all go away now completely accidentally boycotts this one. I stay well away - I really don't like international football, am only interested in the domestic games and even then very narrowly to those that affect my own team both directly and indirectly.

It's weird but for me I can't think of anything worse than England winning a major tournament, so I probably have the opposite feelings to the vast majority of the country when it's on.

This mid season break might save Everton though. If we had a normal number of games between now and the transfer window we'd be miles adrift at the bottom by January but as its only 4 games, we can't be all that far behind. We need creative players and probably a goal scorer, if we can even afford to sign anyone.

Totally agree. I can't stand international football, all it does is injury our players.

Re England winning a major tournament, I'd hate it, years of glorification from the gutter press and I have a feeling that there would be an increase in xenophobia and racism.

I don't know who was advising Cristiano Ronaldo that the best answer to his difficult season so far is to go on Piers Morgan's show to whine about Man United not picking him or whining about "betrayal" etc. But Jesus Christ. What a terrible advert to any prospective employer.

its the different world people like that live in...!

Someone who's making money off the interview or wants to ghost-write a book.

He's doing it to force himself out, no coincidence with timing. Put him on gardening leave until the summer.

Not sure Ive ever seen any player in any team sport come out and do that while still at their club.

Ronaldo would need to do a little digging aswell. Morgan is the guy who called him a pizza faced Portuguese goon or something years ago. Used to bash him in the papers, with a small side of xenophobia.

You would not get many united argue against that.

Indeed, although these two things can co-exist between knowing that Man United have been too focused on its commercial performance that it's dropped the ball on sporting performance and Ronaldo wanting commercial income too, as seen here...

Roy Keane in 2005, maybe? Though even then, that was slagging off Man United on their own in-house TV channel in an interview that I'm not 100% was ever broadcast to the world rather than going on to national TV to whine to a big name in celebrity grievance airing.

Well we're all aware he tried to force himself out in the summer only for one offer from a Middle East-based club to come through and that not being of interest, before his stock fell further by being a hindrance to Manchester United in his appearances this season.

So... now that the PL hiatus has begun, who do we think is winning the World Cup?

If indeed we care given the utter mess induced for this one.

Argies

Not as enthused about the WC as I normally would be for obvious reason but I think the Argies have a great shout.

We (England) will limp into possibly the quarters then get turfed out. You read it here first 😄

Keane did it in the 2002 World Cup aswell but he never said "I dont respect the manager". Wild stuff from Ron.

Well he did say that. But that was kinda different in that the meltdown came not to the media but during a team meeting where Keane is alleged to have said to manager Mick McCarthy's face, "I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager and I don't rate you as a person. You can stick your World Cup up your arse. I've got no respect for you", as well as calling him a "fucking w*nker".

Maybe it's just a men's football thing but I will say I went to the Women's Euros final in July and didn't get a poisonous vibe from that after England won that competition, either on the day or in the media for a few days afterwards when it was near the top of the bulletins, or at least if there was, it didn't cross my line of sight.

But then equally some people do tend to attach strange meaning to sport as a jumping off point for such leaps. I can recall one Tory MP in 2016 shortly after the Brexit vote combining the UK's medal total at that summer's Olympics with ones of former British Empire territories to say the British Empire got more medals than the EU, which is a spectacularly flawed piece of logic and one that duly got the piss taken out of it.

Currently the women's game is a breath of fresh air, on the pitch as well as off.

Just hope it doesn't become tainted.

After Mick wrongly accussed him of faking an injury to miss a game. Guaranteed to elicit that response. It was also in private. Not in a sneaky unannounced interview.

Not entirely true though nal.

Keane was as calculated as Ronaldo, he knew the furore it would of created. Both did it for selfish reason, to serve there own agendas.

Agree on Ronaldo but not on Keane. Keane did it (the initial interview with the Irish Times) because he was fed up with the "ah sure we're here for the craic" Irish mentality.
