Football 2022/23

So the reward for the England v Senegal winners is France, and Mbappe judging by the France-Poland game is now looking in the mood.

I mean, much as Tunisia did beat the French, the French did rest all their good players for it and could well be showing signs they have got over the strange funk that came over them at Euro 2020(1). Much as I can't say this from an England perspective just yet - Senegal won't be a push over.

I think the France v Tunisia score is irrelevant. The 3 teams that won their first 2 games, lost the third. That's no coincidence.

Well yes - that was a real avant garde line-up by Deschamps in that one with 9 changes, a formation tweak and people in their wrong positions (not least Real Madrid midfielder Camavinga at left-back). Even then they would've had a draw had they not had a last minute equaliser disallowed.

Though yes, Portugal and Brazil had the same thing in their games so point taken.

England v France for the first team at a major tournament since Euro 2012. Could be quite the decent showdown. Even if a lot might depend on how quiet Walker/Trippier can keep Mbappe, and if England can get space to run at their full-backs, who in the Poland game comprised of an out-of-position CB and a more attack-minded guy at left back.

After a really exciting group stage, these last 16 ties have looked really mismatched on paper and have so far played out that way. I think the next 4 look more interesting on paper than the first 4. The quarter finals should be some good games.

It's a curious one in some respect. So far it's felt like a more ordinary last 16. Senegal had their moments against England but from the moment England scored, it was fairly comfortable, and the same could also be said for France and Poland. Australia could've snuck something against Argentina in fairness, but that's kinda been the limit.

England v France has potential to either be a really good game given both have better attackers than they do defenders, or a fairly mediocre 0-0 decided on penalties.

So I see Mike Ashley's first foray back into sports after leaving Newcastle is seeing him make friends in another city. Good grief.

Coventry's stadium has been a ridiculous saga ever since they first moved to it long before they had to groundshare with Northampton, but Jesus Christ.

Wrexham are playing there in the FA cup. I suspect they will work something out, so they keep playing there.

I know it's a minor groan, but am I the only one who is getting fed up with these random statistics that seem to be popping up during games!

You are not alone. Admit now I don't even see them my brain has filtered it out. Is it to do with gambling, seems odd stats
