Purely based on their latest two albums I'd say there's an enormous argument to be had on if we'd have ever heard of the Arctic Monkeys without the albums which preceded them.

Fight.

What is this take though? I think it's just easier to say you don't like the current trajectory (which is completely fine) than this weird hypothetical. It's almost as if you're saying they should just completely stay in one lane because that's the one that makes it popular. It's not even a massive shift tbh, they've hardly pulled a Talk Talk where their earlier stuff is miles away from their last two albums to a point in which record executives cried when they heard the albums.

Could say that about any band ever tbh. Oasis weren't selling out stadiums at the end cause Dig Out Your Soul was good.

They change their sound every record, maybe one day they will go back to doing something you prefer.

Why do you spend so much time in this thread about a band you don’t like?

Because there's still an angsty 15 year old inside me who remembers the utter joy had from listening to Mardy Bum in the 6th form common room having downloaded it pre-first album release on Limewire feels let down.

I'll stop now 😂

That music still exists though, and your enjoyment of it shouldn't be deferred by a newer release.

If you look at their run of output from Suck It And See to The Car (and even include Submarine and Everything You’ve Come To Expect), you’ll see that AM was an anomaly in terms of their musical development and progression.

Without that, you’d be going back 15 years to 2007 for their last true ‘rock’ sound, so it’s surprising that so many still expect it from them.

SIAS has a few rocky ones in there. Dont sit down, library pictures, Brick by Brick (i try not think about this one tho)

It's not even a debate really, 100% no. Well, "not heard of" is obviously untrue but they would not be international stadium filling megastars based on TBHC + The Car, no.

That's not a bad thing, that's just them using their success to do something they clearly actually want to do rather than being crowd-pleasers. Filmmakers do it all the time. One for them, one for us.

Aye suppose, but you wouldn’t really class the album as a whole as being full of ‘bangers’. Certainly not against their first two releases anyway.

Have to say, will maintain these songs will die on their arse in a large crowd.

But I'm looking forward to hearing some of them. Some lovely sonic textures.

I agree with you, some of the people I know going to the Sheff gig are gonna be in for a shocker when they whip out the moog for Sculptures of Anything Goes.

There was a very noticeable mid-set lull during proceedings at Leeds Festival this summer, in the five-song run through That's Where You're Wrong, Pretty VisitorsTranquility Base Hotel + CasinoWhy'd You Only Call Me When You're High? and I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am. Two of those pulled more muted reactions than I anticipated, and it blended into something of a twenty-minute soporific stint in a crowd that massive. Say what people like to say about Dave and The 1975, but couldn't recall such a prolonged gulf in energy levels. (Granted, this could well be comparative - the crowd went absolutely nuts for the first five songs of the night.)

And Paul McCartney wouldn't have headlined Glastonbury if he'd only ever released his solo stuff. So what? It's a pointless argument!

Albums they made. If you don't like the new stuff, don't listen to it - simple as

The reason they're as good as they are is because they have never and will never pander to expectations
