2024 Headliners

Probably as much a reflection of Cat Stevens being a slightly lower profile Legend Slot tbh.

Perhaps, but there's also no stylistic need or choice to have a fourth name up there at all. Lizzo's placement there.

Now, I know The Guardian is not the be-all-and-end-all, but Eavis' comments here - "She could totally headline" - is pretty much where I feel she was going with it. I'd argue you don't say that about an act who isn't headlining unless you're talking them up as a potential "fourth headliner", no?

Purely on a personal note Stevie, Dua and Coldplay is a pretty underwhelming trio.** Three big gets for the festival and can see why they've been booked but none of them excite me.

Stevie I've seen, and enjoyed, a couple of times before but I feel I've got the full experience from him. Dua I can take or leave and Coldplay bore the arse off of me. It's a little disappointing that there'd be no headliner to truly get me pumped this year, and could even be my first ever 0/3 for El Pointo in 20 years of going.

**Of course all the usual caveats of there being great stuff on other stages apply.

Yeah, I’ll probably go see Dua and Stevie assuming there’s not something amazing on another stage, but I can’t see myself getting massively excited about either in the run up - seen Stevie twice and this will undoubtedly be more of the same, and seen Dua headline a festival also so the thrill of seeing her is dampened a little.

It’s a strong and pretty classic looking Glastonbury trio, just not one that personally gets me mega amped up - that was always resting Madonna, whose apparent dropping out is an absolute shiter.

That said, getting Stevie in as a replacement is brilliant going for them so fair play to them on that.

Yeah Stevie for Madge is a fair swap.

Just does nothing for me.

Stevie in 2010 was an all-time great headline performance for me. I have no interest in repeating it but there will be plenty of new punters who weren't there in 2024 who will now get to experience that.

I'm personally happy with the headliner trio - I've seen them all before and can happily skip all 3 and enjoy some headline slots on other stages which is far less stressful than the Pyramid!

You at the National with me then?

Have to say, on a personal note, the whole "stressing that point" annoys me, given it's so utterly interchangeable. Emily went out of her way to suggest Lizzo was a fourth headliner last year, rather than Cat Stevens.

On a similar personal note, it's not an all-timer trio for me, and that's in part because we're getting two prior headliners in the mix. But I absolutely appreciate that, objectively, it is a very strong line-up - and it also fits my other preferential criteria of the balance of one on the up (Dua Lipa), one at the top (Coldplay) and one on the down (Stevie Wonder), to put it less eloquently. (See also: 2019.)

They did put Lizzo on the top line of the poster, and we all know what that infers.

Previous years have had the legend there, as that's been talked up to be the 4th headliner.  On the year the 4th headliner isn't a woman, just insert any woman in that position on the poster?  It needs to be consistent at least.

There was a pretty obvious point made from Emily to try and save face of Lizzo being more than a sub to try and distract from an all male headline set. I'm sure there was something about Lizzo could have done it herself so I'd agree that Emily did herself no favours there really. The legend spot is different as that's been said previously that it kind of gives then a 4th headliner, but no reason for a sub to be top line.

It's probably Stevie's last hurrah, so I'm all over it.

Hopefully it will be a bit less busy than Macca or Reg, but given its been 14 years since he last did it it could still be a fairly chunky crowd.

I agree. If they put a big electronic act on at the same time, it should spread the crowd. It won't be Elton-sized of course (especially as it's predicted to be Friday, not Sunday), but it'll be up by the tree, no doubt

As above, let's hope The National are programmed on the Other Stage so the people with zero funk have somewhere to go.

I never quite got a handle on the scale of Macca back home. How big was it?

That the typography fits? That their agent negotiated it?

They put Janet Jackson up there as well and nobody called her a headliner.

*except Janet Jackson, obviously.

Are you suggesting they put 'Lizzo' on the top line because 'Cat Stevens' didn't fit? 😄

I'm more suggesting that (in general terms) they'd have had no problem putting just 3 (or for that matter 5) people on the top line if that made more aesthetic sense.

I don’t think it does need to be consistent. I think they can pretty much do what they want.

Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Stevie Wonder would be a huge set of headliners for the festival, if true.

Personal tastes aside, Dua Lipa continues to get bigger and bigger. Coldplay* are selling out stadium tours, having to add extra dates in a lot of instances. Stevie Wonder is an absolute musical icon.

The festival have nailed it if these are the 3.

*I do take the point about them headlining before. But even if they were an “easy” option I can’t think of many festivals in the world that can use a band as big as Coldplay as the easy option.

Pipe down. I've seen Stevie at Glasto before and I've got deep personal reasons for seeing the National this year...

Pretty f**king big I think. I was at the front and you can never tell when you're that far forward. But from what I heard it was massive.

I was towards the back, and I took this photo whilst Noel was on. It was easily the biggest crowd I'd ever seen (Admittedly I'm usually closer to the front so can't really gauge it as much)

Coldplay again is bad news for the festival. Beyond stale.

Desolate. Bleak. Lacklustre. Unambitious. Dull. Worrying if thats the best they can do.

On paper I agree, or at least I understand this point of view.

In the field, when they play, it won't be any of those words.

Glastonbury having Coldplay, one of the biggest bands in the world, as their festival exclusive house band is a huge huge get for the festival that many a festival worldwide would love to have. It’s just a shame everything they’ve released in the last fifteen years f**king sucks.
