2024 Headliners

It’s funny because I thought Coachella of all places would’ve continued to sell out with a TikTok-ified lineup and slightly lesser headliners considering the sheer commercialism and ‘place to be seen’ aspect of it, but just goes to show that if the headliners aren’t the best of the best, people won’t be rushing to buy tickets, and should be a good indicator with Glastonbury when people ask ‘why have they booked *insert giant stadium band* to headline instead of *insert smaller bump up act*?!’ - because the moment Glastonbury starts dropping the ball and not aiming for the tippity-top, it’s a slippery slope towards it no longer selling out much like was the case in 2008*, especially with the increased ticket price.

*Obviously the crap weather of 2005/07 played a part in that too, but can’t imagine those headliners left people dying to buy tickets.

I came on here, saw the topic was hot, hoped for some potentially interesting news and all I find is a a couple of pernickety people arguing over another festival.

Some of the points are valid (inflation causing issues around the world and the struggle for festivals to book big headliners) which weirdly it seems you pretty much agree on yet you still argue! I can only work out that you disagree in music taste and what you consider good headliners, which among adults should be fine and not turned into arguments and insults.

It's the nitpicking that's the worst.

I know it's tough not having any Glastonbury line up news but can't you just go on a nice Sunday stroll, see family/friends, listen to music, watch a film, read a book, argue on X or doom scroll on Instagram?

Dunno what it's like where you are but no one's going for a nice Sunday stroll here.

Isha is really giving it her all.

Mild with some bits of sun in the South East! Is Isha coming here?

The shocking lineup is your opinion. My opinion is booking Dua Lipa and Coldplay would be pretty bad too.

However you look at, LDR, Tyler and Doja Catvare not €600 as a top line and I will say on record that  either are Stevie Wonder, Dua Lipa and Coldplay of they the Glastonbury 3.

Coldplay I fancy seeing again there I'd a couple of songs I want to here and I opted against them also time. They are one of those bands though that you know are costing at least £100, not just £80+ so they are a get. Dua Lipa I will see unless a really good alternative, The Prodigy would change it. Stevie I'm in two minds.

If I took LDR, No Doubt who I feel is the coup, Blur, Bleachers and Charlotte de Witte out it's not worth anything to me personally.

Not sure this makes sense? Emily's approach helping Glastonbury into a social media place is why everyone does it now?

Right so Glastonbury were forced to used social media as they do now because people took pictures of themselves at the festival?

No one is that people of the normal people and who use social media don't attend Glastonbury. Glastonbury sold out every year before it needed to jump on social media 'trends' as you've put. Their own hashtags and such links makes them appear on socials differently and that became the new 'cool way' to be to find everything related which has just grew and grew. Glastonbury could make all their posts without any of that and still sell and attract well over the standard for interest interest.

That is Glastonbury reflecting trends in real life. It was going to be a huge presence on Social Media no matter what.

I'd be shocked if Glastonbury struggled in the next five years to shift tickets. It's become so massive that it'll take a few real duffers when it comes to headline trios to do that - and it's been years since they've booked an out-and-out dud trio as a whole.

Anyway, on the subject of metal, book Ghost to play opposite Stevie Wonder.

The next wet year is going to be the big test I think!

We were supposed to have a good battering but not too bad by all accounts. I managed a walk for 2 hours in complete dry.

Oh its very much cost. Coachella is a shocking lineup for the cost. The headliners as a trio are the worst I could think of to headline any event I went to. I don't attend Wireless in England, it's Wireless with extras as a bigger gig.

I've been going to the festival for long enough to have seen the difference in youngsters appearing but that also coincides with the type of booking Glastonbury are making more now. Glastonbury has got a bit more of a hostile annoying crowd over the years. I first noticed it the year Kasabian headlined. I enjoyed the set a lot but the crowd it brought it I'd not seen many times if at all at Glastonbury before. So obviously nothing proof as in a write up but this year is my 11th year attending since and including 2008.

Booking the likes of Doja Cat, MTS which Glastonbury have will bring a younger crowd, a vast more about of the tiktok crowd, instagrammers, selfie....we're watching MTS hashtags etc etc. I don't ever thing Glastonbury needed that, it survived perfectly fine with out it.

I think you are just getting old to be honest, it's 16 years since your first of course the crowd is going to be getting younger, and so it should, it would be doomed if it wasn't

The point is that 7 or 8 years back before social media existed the festival was a paradise - now its full of people snapping photos and messaging one another.

This is the world that we live in.

Sadly now many people can’t just appreciate and experience the festival without recording it and instantly posting it on social media mostly trying to impress followers. Enjoy the wonder of festival using all your senses, not just through an I phone camera.

As a foreigner who doesn't post anything on social media anymore, I was able to completely isolate myself from the world the 5 times I've been there. I didn't even have a working cellphone the first 3 times (2013, 14 an 16). I found out the world cup results by walking through some stall which had the scores from the day before written in chalk. Good times!  Wish I could go back sometime....

The festival was better when there was no electricity, just hippies with fires and a guitar.

Been almost pointless having Beyoncé, Elton John and The Rolling Stones playing, because someone had their phone out and took a picture mid set.

Yes I'm older but I've seen the difference and the different antics. That's not just getting older, that's just being aware.

It's basically been wall to wall heatwave weeks every year since 2017.  The run of baking hot festivals has to end at some point.

Not convinced that the audience is the youngest it ever was.

It's possible the average may now be younger than it was say 10-15 years ago. But I'm pretty confident the average age today definitely wouldn't be any younger than it was in the late 90s or early 00s when the festival was directly competing with R+L for the youth audience. From the mid-00s onwards Glastonbury started to broaden their appeal a lot and the average got (quite significantly) older, whereas R+L went all in on the GCSE crowd.
