2024 Headliners

all this clash talk has made me double down on how i hate that more and more festivals are moving away from clashing bands.

i love the horrible choice you sometimes have to make, its part of a festival, its what makes a great festival!

Doesn't help that a lot of morons were sitting down on blankets. They had to do an announcement at one point i think.

There were a few announcements on the big screen, but of course anyone sitting down wouldn't be able to see them! When they finally made a loudspeaker announcement, people around me were popping up like Whac-a-moles 😂

Was in the pit myself! Brilliant end to the festival. Viagra boys-War on drugs- qotsa was an all time run.

We were just to the right hand side of the pit. Yes, Viagra -> TWoD and QOTSA, what a finish to an amazing 5 days, epic !! 🤘

Can you not just tell them stand up and if met with resistance then just stand on them?

Never got the fuss about how many people watch a Pyramid headliner. Are you stood at the back with a clicker?

Im like this when people justify headliners based on streaming stats.

There was nobody actually directly by me at the time I could see sitting tbh and I felt relatively comfortable cause I was wide of the stage.

I did this once outside John Peel (as was) when hordes were approaching for George Ezra. People thought I was being aggy but I could see what was coming towards them! (And also I couldn't get away bloody fast enough)

Sitting in an area with thousands of people moving about around you that pissed and probably on other things is a Grade A move for an idiot.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who likes Coldplay. How do they manage to sell out massive shows? Who are their fans and why?

All except 1 of my group are fans of at least 2 of their albums and a few other songs at least. Add to the fact that they know how to put on a show and you can probably see why they sell out massive shows.

Yeah, asking for trouble. I've seen how many tents get flattened by people falling on to them too.

I know a few, and am one myself. I think it depends who you surround yourself with, serious music fans probably wouldn't like them, or at least admit to liking them.

I also think the people who sell out their shows have seen them before over the years

We need more announcements when a field is rammed and especially prior to the artist starting and folk are entering the field. Too much space taken up by folk  lounging about whilst at the back others are struggling to get through.  Maybe some friendly advice on chair and rug etiquette sent out with tickets?

I think that friendly advice on crowd crust would be more beneficial. No point getting people to fold chairs and blankets to make space if no one can get to it.

The “nobody likes Coldplay” line is clearly and and has always been false. You don’t have the success they’ve enjoyed down the years without a sizeable fan base.

I don't like anything they've done (that I've heard) for many many years. In fact I hate a fair amount of it. But similarly I like a few of their older tunes and had a passably decent time at their headline slot on Sunday 2016. I was only there because I was so incredibly knackered after 5 days of trudging through mud and my legs and in particular my feet were absolutely destroyed by my cheap wellies.

I’ll quite happily admit that I like their first two albums. Their output has (with a couple of exceptions) declined noticeably since to the point the last few albums have been borderline unlistenable.

I will say Coldplay have written some great songs. Strawberry Hill is a beautiful and strange little track.

Their music has aged a lot better than 90% of the bands the British music press hyped up when they used to slag them off. It's only really post 2011 where they've become truly shite.

simple equation for the level of the headliner, using objective sources that is not based on our own tastes:

Critical Acclaim (metacritic) / 5

Popularity (streaming numbers) / 5

Add them together gives you the rating out of 10 for the "level" of the headliner. fool proof i tell ya 🤣. Doesnt always equate into a relative performence or take into account the controversies surrounding them. bit harder with heritage acts.

Lets use this for recent headliners:

Ed Sheeran : Critical - 1 // Popularity - 5 - 6 / 10 mid - ish headliner

Adele - Critical - 4 // Popularity - 5 - 9/10

Arcade Fire - Critical (at the time) - 5 - Popularity - 2 - 7/10

Kanye - Critical (at the time) 5  Popularity - 5 - 10/10

Kendrick - Critical -5 Popularity 4 - 9/10

Dua Lipa - Critical 4 - Popularity - 4 8/10

and so on, feel free to use this fantastic equation , you are welcome for solving all the argumentgs in this thread.

FWIW

SZA - Critical 5 - Popularity - 3 - 8/10

yes im bored today

Imagine if you were well rested, felt fresh, had new feet and some decent footwear! That passably decent time could turn into a great time.

The worrying thing for me re the SZA news is this probably rules out there being any really big subs ala Olivia Rodrigo (Lizzo last year) as they'd have just bumped them up. I also feel like it may rule out a churnups style slot as that would've surely been the easy option to bump too. Still, looking forward to the line-up and reaction. Hoping we get it asap but have a feeling BST will want shows (SZA and potentially Stevie Nicks) on sale for up to a week so we won't actually get anything until w/c 18/03 at the earliest.
