@LMDS Brilliant work! Thank you!

I can see SLOWDIVE being added to line up after their Spanish shows in February 24, because that genre is somehow missing till now. and Primavera Sound Festival was Slowdive's first breath into a second life. it is such a pleasure to see they sold out their shows now even in Germany and the shows in Madrid and Barcelona will be sold out soon too.

They are dramatically more popular now than they were at their 'peak'.

The band must be pinching themselves!

The Beth Gibbons - Vampire Weekend is one of the obvious clashes of this year. She cannot play at the Auditori for several reasons: there would be some kind of hint on her description/Gabi would have said sth about it, plus she already did that when the festival was way smaller and she has a prominent placement on the poster and putting her there would generate a logistics problem. For me, the obvious spot is the infamous sunset slot at Ray-Ban but this year they moved it a bit early I think and with the new Amazon-main-stage next to it she could either be playing there. Anyway, 9:30-10:30ish.

Now, Mordor has two possible iterations: Justice or some combination of Peggy Gou - Justice are closing Mordor. Pulp will be playing right before them, so they're starting at 11pm (New Order) or 12am (Halsey, Fred again). That leaves 10pm or 11pm for Vampire Weekend clashing directly with Beth Gibbons.

My two cents: somehow they got lucky this year not clashing big acts playing Ray-Ban/Amazon with similar acts playing Mordor (see Depeche Mode vs Four Tet, The War on Drugs vs St. Vincent + Caroline Polachek, NxWorries + New Order vs Rema + Perfume). These are logical clashes so the most logical clash for me would be Deftones - Beth Gibbons and one of them ends up playing Mordor and the other one Ray-Ban or Amazon.

I don't mean to sound unkind but what is the point of these Clashfinders?

Given the huge unpredictability of timings of such a big festival, they literally won't help anyone to, er, find clashes!

Some people love to play with them, so to answer your question, the point is just to have some silly fun (if you're into it).

Down the Rabbit Hole just announced its first wave of acts.

Jungle, LCD Soundsystem, Michael Kiwanuka and The National are Headlining. So hardly any new names in the mix for what just seems to shape up to be a rather thin festival season

We won! Shame about LCD and Massive Attack, but after seeing all the other lineups this week - nothing matches Primavera for quality. Definitely a thin festival season, so they have done well to put together such a good lineup.

Exactly. I think PS Porto is probably outperforming DTRH and BKS at halve their price and has managed to fill the void of headliners elsewhere with very good bookings that (yet) appear nowhere else like Lana, Sza, Mitski, with BCN adding Vampire Weekend, Deftones, Jai Paul, Clipse, FKA Twigs and  Beth Gibbons to that.

I think DTRH has a solid line up (and its not complete yet) but altogether, both PS are stronger

Why are Jungle headlining quite a few fests. I know they had their own day at all points east past year.

Is there a big album on the way? I just don't get the hype

It's like having Unknown mortal orchestra suddenly start headlining.

Everything they do is directed at live shows. They put on a great party and their fusion of elements of soul, funk, synth into danceable and accessible pop songs just connects well with many people. I'm not a big fan, but their shows I saw in 2017 and 2019 were already fun

Totally agree with you.

For me they deserve to be elevated to a second line name and are fun but don't have the wow factor or depth of back catalogue of a headliner.

Would trade LCD Soundsystem and Massive Attack for The National, Disclosue and Phoenix and it would be no doubt the best festival of 2024. Some other names like Michael Kiwanuka, Jessie Ware and The Smile would be also that. Still I think we will get the best lineup out of all festivals. Maybe only Coachella and Glasto can compete and outperform but then again they have much more money than Primavera and more power.

I kind of feel that there is a shift in music industry now, specially after corona, big names like Beyonce, Coldplay, The Weeknd, Metallica and others just stopped doing festivals because it's much more profitable for them to do solo shows where they can easily charge between 100 to 300 euros per concert. Artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Paramore that would be second line names in festivals are the new headliners festivals but most of them are still doing solo tours and charging 150 euros easily. So the only thigs left to headline festivals are names that some years ago would be the thirds line names.

Things like Jungle and PJ Harvey couple of years ago couldn´t headline at all. Same for Michael Kiwanuka, I like him but he haven't had any new music for almost 5 years and he's headlining big festivals now. I think that's what Gabi meant when he said that the artists now ask for more and more money. Hopefully this bubble will explode and we comeback to a reality where it's not normal to pay 300 euros for a Taylor Swift concert and 150 euros for Olivia Rodrigo concert and 200 euros to a festival with names that 5 years ago wouldn't even headline local mid size festivals.

I've been reading more and more that the placement of Lana and The National together on Friday is done on propose so that Taylor Swift shows up. It´s very funny, wouldn´t be impossible but still interesting placement.

People are insane. Imagine a festival that likely won't sell out keeping the biggest act in the world a secret.

I once went to FIB Benicassim like 7 years ago (it was exactly like you think it would be lol) and I remember chatting to a group of girls from the UK. They told us were hearing rumours that Ed Sheeran and Eminem were going to fly in on the last night and do a joint secret set. I don't even think the festival was sold out.

Yeah these type of rumours come up all the time at many fests. The thing here is: Many people do not realise there is a festival "season" or touring cycles. They think that that one fest they go to is the focal point of everything in music and logically every act will play there, regardless of economics, logistics and reason. A local street fest in my area (approx 5.000 people over 3 days, no entry fee) held an open poll on facebook some years ago which acts they should book (they had coverbands made up of dads and shanty choirs mostly) and people voted in Coldplay and David Guetta. And a friend of mine works for a big label and he used to get calls all the time to aks if Ed Sheeran could play their daughters birthday or smth. Music is just an area were people have no grasp of reality whatsoever.

In other News, Belle and Sebastian just got announced for Elbjazz, the Weekend of PS Porto.

True. I suppose the vast majority would consider us obsessive about this stuff. They're not thinking about logistics.

Not that I think it's probable, but if she's mates with Dressner, is in the area and wants to bop on stage for The Alcott I don't think it's beyond the realms of reality. It's not something that would be publicised for the very reason of not having every Taylor Swift fan in Spain who couldn't get tickets to see her descend and completely alter the vibe of the festival.

This surprises me a little - I was expecting them last year to be at PS since they had a new (and brilliant) album in 2022 and I was quite sure, that they won't miss them next year with another new (and also quite good) album this year.

Plus Lana is there and they have Snow on the Beach song together. So it's not impossible but the chance is near to 1%. And then again if that would happen, I don't think the necessity of Primavera announcing it, imagine that due to her schedule she doesn't show up, there will be a lot of Taylor Swift fans mad about it. And yes every year there's a rumour like this about any artist, I agree about that.
