I have to say it is not a very good example, and certainly not illustrating any difficulty in drawing a line. While I don't use Spotify, it is pretty obvious that no one using this service is either giving money to or endorsing 1 million individual artists. On the other hand, I think it is clear that some people, like me, will not give money or go to any festival where the organisers think it is good idea to invite Arcade Fire. That's a reality, quite a clear line, and starts to become a problem because it excludes people from a festival. And I don't think endorsement is the key here; in the situation I'm describing no one has to explicitly or implicitly endorse Win Butler, perhaps except the festival organisers.

But you are comparing something totally different i.e. the ethics of a festival inviting Arcade Fire.

I was making a totally different comparison which is the ethics of a band agreeing to play at a festival that also has Arcade Fire on the lineup alongside 100+ other acts (and as another poster pointed out, probably wasn't even aware of this when they agreed).

Right, I agree it is a lesser ethical problem for a band finding out they are going to play with Arcade Fire, than inviting them to play, but effectively they are connected ethical issues. I don't really blame Massive Attack, but if I was in their shoes I would probably complain to BBK or write to my fans about the uneasy situation of sharing a bill with Arcade Fire. And to be clear this has nothing to do with their neutral initiative, these things neither add-up or cancel out!

People might have missed this as they just randomly dropped it on the Primavera insta, but ATARASHII GAKKO! have been added to the Saturday. Hadn't heard of them before this but looks like they're very big in Japan but don't have much international audience so probably won't be too high up.

Not the kind of thing I'd sit and listen to but should be a fun live show and will probably check them out.

They've got a fun sort-of cover of Beastie Boys' Intergalactic here:

Slowdive just added to a festival that didn't have them in the first announcement (Wide Awake) and a few days before...

They are 95% in. Probably just waiting for them to sell more tickets for their Barcelona concert, and the moment it’s sold out or over they will announce them. Either for the main festival or for Ciutat, it will be the biggest name at the festival to be added at a later point.

Maybe, maybe not. They announced Wide Awake even though their London show is not sold out, so it is not like there is a set pattern or certainty. Has Primavera ever done that for other artists (excluding secret sets and late replacements)?

Just accepted a job offer in Barcelona so this year I save over a grand on flights & accommodation and suddenly the ticket prices look like a steal.

Also really hoping for a strong Ciutat lineup as I won't be bound by time!

The dream! so jealous. Congrats. What job did you get? We would love to do the same. The experience of the festival as a local would be incredible popping to the cuidad shows after work. Let us know if there are any other jobs going for us all! 😝

With the ridiculous new salary restrictions for immigrants in the UK, that's probably a question that 500,000 people had today 🙂

Thanks man! What I do is pretty niche tech-adjacent work that I stumbled into 2 companies back. Got an offer from a Spanish tech company here with decent conditions (for Barcelona) - a very significant pay cut compared to what I've been used to at home but I've decided it's well worth the drop in salary considering the location.

Such a great city, every time I've been there I've fantasised about the move and it all finally lined up.

Whilst salaries are low, rent in Barcelona is a lot less than the UK equivalent, beer is cheap and sunshine and beach are free!

Exactly my thoughts. I'm coming from Ireland so the weather alone almost justifies it even without the great food, cheap drinks, constant events, beach, mountains, public transport etc.

Yes hands down Barcelona wins on all fronts. I will keep trying even it is a remote job in the uk then I get to move for a couple of months a year.

Their routing does not look like Primavera at all. I don't know why people would say a band is "95% in" when all indications point to the opposite?

We are not waiting for Slowdive, we are (porbably) waiting for the entire thing to be coordinated.

Couldn't agree any more. It takes time to get it all lined up and they have the third party venues to manage too as an extra complication. Chances of this being Slowdive related are close to nil.

Would be very surprised if not released this week or next though with more chance of this week.

The programming for the Ciutat line up is more complicated because you'd ask both bands that are not on the current line up and - if you can't get the ones you wanted - bands that are already on the line up to play a second set. Then you'll have to group them into musically fitting billings and find a venue that accomodates both the technical and production needs of all the bands playing (sometimes up to four acts) and the expected number of people coming to that show.

To add to that, they'll need to establish the ticketing system for those shows and to do that, everything has to be absolutely watertight.

It's a holiday today and Friday in Spain, I wouldn't expect any announcement until Monday…

Depends if they even have the Pull&Bear stage in 2024. The Hyperdub and Hivern Discs takeovers will be at the Warehouse, Thursday and Saturday respectively. I'm not sure what will be there on Friday (probably I need to read the poster more) and then BR artists still to be announced...

P&B stage had a packed schedule this year and I don't really see enough dance/electronic artists to fill it this year. There are a few and I'm sure they could make it work but different vibe with the artists - I don't see Sandwell District playing after Teki Latex as an example but who knows.

All the electronic artists announced yet fit perfectly in the warehouse ,  to close big stages in the late night and a few in the auditori… definitely they have erased the P&B stage as least as we know yet (and the electronic stage in Porto) or they will announce a bunch of djs later for some strange reason.

We all know organising the ciudad gigs takes time etc etc

but all previous years it was announced at the same time!

what they were announcing later was which venue which band etc

But the names of the bands were announced without a delay.
so not sure what’s going on

That's true.

They had about 60 Ciutat names last year. I expect fewer this year given no Madrid but I suppose it's still quite a lot to plan and the main lineup will always be the priority.
