It's more the fact they've come across as a very tight nit unit and I feel a member leaving is going to have a bigger impact than it would have on other bands. As I said Buck and Adrianne are divorced so whatever has happened is huge and I have a feeling it might be a tricky tour for them

Its probably the israel stuff, they were playing some shows there for some dodgy people which i assume he instigated, and i think things were getting a hassle on that front

Lead singer has been doing a lot of Palestine fundraiser solo stuff too right? Probably a lot of friction in the group at this time. Very curious how these next few shows play out.

This is the same band that worked just fine when Buck was away from the band for a tour. I'm sure they will be absolutely fine and it'll be an interesting new dynamic.

Anyone travelling by train? I'm hoping to catch a National Express from Bristol but timings are tight as feck with my flight. If I miss that, it's a train from Bristol Temple Mead to Newport I think, then on to Abergavenny from there, where I can get a shuttle to the the site. All looks suspiciously straightforward. Anyone travelled this way before? Are the shuttles regular? Reliable?

I'm facing into my first ever alcohol free festival.  At GM I usually take wine and buy either lovely real ale or real cider from the specialist bars (rather than the standard bars).   Does anyone know if any provision is made for non-alcohol (or low alcohol) ales or ciders?  I'd rather not have to bring everything as I like to support the festival bars.  Anyone have any tips for an alcohol free festival?

I think I read somewhere that the charity water stands sometimes have sparking water and even cordial, not very sophisticated but could be interesting once in a while!

In 2022 my other half was pregnant so she got to know the non-alcoholic options pretty well. You get a good range of mocktails, which are in effect a posh GnT, Mojito, Singapore Sling type option (the cocktail bar up top is the place to go - but you will get an effort from all the bars). 

She didn't have the low alcohol beer (not a beer drinker anyway, and was still alcoholic so steered clear) but there was an IPA option. No idea about cider.

Thanks for that, I like the sound of the cocktails!  That's up between Far Out and Chai Wallah's isn't it?

I'll keep my eyes out for the IPA too

Yep, that's the one. Absolutely under siege by wasps (due to all the sugary syrups) but if you left them alone, they mostly leave you alone. 

 

The low-alc beer/IPA is on offer at all the bars, can't miss it. The non-alc menu is on display next to the main menu above the bar.

You're lucky having your hedonistic weekend, I'd be well up for that if it wasn't for a stupid medical condition which means I can't indulge in anything except good music.  

So  my next question is...
I love psych - so what recommendations, particularly from Walled Garden/Rising stage listings (because I probably know most of the stuff on the Mountain and Far Out stages) would you recommend?

Ah I'm sorry bexj. I use lads in a generic, Irish all inclusive way that encompasses men, women, children and indeed all God's creatures. And music of course, is King this particular weekend, with beer just a tasty added extra. Psych not really my thing but I'm certainly enjoying exploring the mammoth back catalogue of Thee Osees who do seem to be more about the Psych that the garagey stuff that I'm more drawn toward.

Lads over here is a softer general term like folks or whatever, none of the lad culture connotations. Its a nice usage, i think. Sorry, I forget sometimes that Internet conversations are not the same as real ones. No offence meant.

The garage stuff was referencing the Osees stuff, I love songs like Goon and if I had my way, but most of their stuff is not really that direction, right? Anyway, some great guitar stuff on offer, looking forward to Mannequin Pussy, Wednesday, Metz, Hotline TNT, Model/Actriz, Lambrini Girls, the Tubs, bar italia, bdrmm......loads to look forward to. Lot's of beautiful quieter stuff too, I've never seen Julia Holter, Marta Del Grandi sounds deadly and I'm enjoying Gillie, Welsh girl kicking things off on Thursday.

Really buzzing about the whole thing, can't wait for kick off.

I’m with both parties here. Like you,  it’s my favourite weekend of the year so will be availing myself of all that’s on offer but whether it’s a result of last year (when I fell asleep standing at the rail waiting for self esteem and missed her entire show) or maybe I’m getting old, but I’ve actually factored in regular coffee and water breaks this year and have thought about doing an alcohol free day. So, if you see a middle age man snoring during Big Thief, ffs wake him up. It’s me, and they’re the main reason I’m going!

There's not been a whole lot of Psych this year that's piqued my interest, though still not waded through the whole line up yet! I think for a psychedelic dose though, I'm mostly looking forward to John Maus, Tinariwen, O Sees, Beak>, Tapir! & Plantoid :~)

O Sees and Beak> are top of my list, forgot about John Maus and will definitely check out Tapir! And Plantoid.  Thanks for the recommendations!

Sort of but not quite 😁 I’d forgotten the headliners start at 11.15 so got there at 10.15 and leant on the railing. The next thing I woke up because my glass (empty) fell out of my hand. Feeling miffed with Self Esteem because I thought she was being a diva and deliberately not showing up on time, I went back to my tent. I woke up the next morning with a bag of half eaten chips in my pocket that I had no recollection of buying. Gutted I’d missed Self Esteem. I don’t normally end up like that, honest! All I can say is some of those GM ales must have crept up on me.

Started planning my clashfinder and can recommend the following (or at least give them a listen before the festival):
Islet (Broadcast type sound);

One Leg One Eye (Lankum solo project);
Maruja (noisey Manc stuff);
John Francis Flynn (moody folky electronica);
Blick Bassey (smooth funk from Cameroon).
