Always my favourite way to approach. Know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but you want:

 

Friday: Your rising star, with a commercial breakthrough. Arena-filling, with some currency, and preferably homegrown. (Sam Fender / Dave / The 1975.)

 

Saturday: Your modern-day chartfiller, with multi-night arena or stadium pedigree to match, capable of packing them in. (Harry Styles / Rihanna / Lady Gaga.)

 

Sunday: Your heritage headliner. Likely still a multi-night arena or stadium artist, but one who has the catalogue that spans back more than two decades and can work an all-ages crowd like seasoned pros. (Madonna / Green Day / Billy Joel.)

I know chart positions aren't everything, but quite surprised by how badly Wild God has flopped.  In at #5 for one week and then sunk like a stone.  I thought physical sales would have kept him buoyant but clearly not.

Yeah, I'm disappointed - though had Oasis not reunited, it would have been at #2 and probably more close-run.

 

The lack of longevity maybe suggests that people have reached the stage where they want to see him as a "hits" artist - but the sales for the First Direct Arena show in Leeds were really slow last time I looked. Kind of gutting.

i love it when people describe bands or artists as 'important' -  really? bloody hell, its music! its fun, its enjoyment, hedonism, its all of that quote by mardy up there - dont take it seriously or you end up with hideous boring Pink Floyd serious nonsense! As soon as an artist becomes 'important' they lose any and all of their appeal!

Yeah - the Hydro looks like it's struggling as well.  Seems the bubble has burst on the wee groundswell he had a few years back and he hasn't quite crossed over to the Dylan / Cohen Mojo boomers market the way some thought he would.  Coupled with turning off a chunk of his OG fanbase with his reactionary politics it's fair to say he's sliding back into the sort of position where even Other Headliner is a bit of a leg up.

Don't think it has much of an impact really. His festival slots in Europe (which I would guess are happening) will already have been locked in place. As would any Glastonbury bookings. He's sold out a night at the O2 and added another so it's not as if nobody is turning up. Leeds sales are probably down due to a Manchester show also being on sale, so for Northern fans (not inc Scotland obviously) sales will be split between the two.

Yeah, Nick Cave hasn't really burst through to the mainstream. Unlikely to hear his stuff on the radio, not sure his fanbase is growing, if anything maybe contracting slightly (as per Calgon's earlier post). Every time I go on social media, I get adverts for the tour/album.

 

I used to love NC but the last few albums have been relentlessly hard work for me. They're clearly as Molesworth would say 'advanced, forthright, signifficant', but do they ever make me want to rush home from work to put one one as son as I burst through the door? No, they do not. Listening to anything by him from the last 10 years feels a bit like doing your homework.

I’m really enjoying Wild God, but always viewed him as having a highly selective appeal so not surprised he’s not doing so well on ticket sales, he’ll never be a Glastonbury headliner in my opinion.

This is why he’s melting into obscurity whilst Fred Again, with his joyful beats, continues to thrive. 
 

Some people make music people love, others make music that hurts your head and makes you want to stick a fork into your face for some light relief.

Still 20 odd years ago - and I genuinely dunno if Michael would have veto power over any booking that Emily would want to make.

 

Which is to say, I assume that the main reason they're not being booked isn't what went down a long time back, but due to how bad it would be.

Michael Eavis says they are banned from Glastonbury as they straight up did not turn up and to this day have never explained it or apologised  - he repeats this all the time -- it has 100% relevance to why they are not booked.   At his talk on the Acoustic stage in 2019 he said they are not allowed on site even if they get tickets
