Stormzy sold out his APE day, no? That's not exactly a small number of tickets.

He didn't pretty sure.

Had this discussion a few days ago, only shows to sell out were the first nick cave and strokes shows pre covid

You LITERALLY asked for an example of him headlining an outdoor show.

Something that is bigger and more wide spread that his own home town you troll.

How has it ‘brought down the levels of what the festival were prepared to book to top it?’

Well usually headliners play something bigger than Brixton Academy as their own single gig before getting a Glastonbury headline spot. Wireless was a day filled with other bands in his own town and Dj Khaled or J Cole aren't topping Glastonbury are they.

If new people don’t headline then Glastonbury are going to really struggle in a few years when all the oldies have died off.  Coldplay, AM, Radiohead, The Cure aren’t going to keep going forever.

Mumfords, Ed, Stormzy, Sza, Dua (and many more in the past) were given shots, some got bigger and some will probably peek at that but it’s about 1.  Giving the opportunities and 2.  The need to as lots of the bigger acts are doing their own thing nowadays more than ever

Arctics you are right about. They had festivals around including Reading in subs spots and they just blew up quicker than anyone. But we are going back 17 years to where thing were a little different. 02 arena was only just built lol

Worth noting Coldplay got their first one because The Strokes pulled out

Kinda. Might be worth thinking what The Strokes had done before the summer of 2002 though. Them and Coldplay were bands in the same boat. Except Coldplay were actually about to release their second album.

Strokes follow up was over a year away.

It's a travesty that The Strokes have never done Glastonbury

There is a known reason for that though. Strokes were due to play Pilton party 2001, pulled out near the date for unspecified reasons and Coldplay stepped up (and flew from Paris) to play.

The Eavis family have never forgiven the strokes, who frankly only ever play for the $$ anyway so unlikely to ever play.

Yeah I'm aware of the back story, still disappointing though.

Definitely right, re the $$. I'd kill for them to properly tour here but I doubt that's happening now.

I think Coldplay played Glastonbury before their first headline slot if I'm not mistaken.

AM going straight in as Pyramid bill-toppers was pretty wild. And apparently something that even caught themselves out for how much of a big deal that was, given they have since said their 2013 date went better than their 2007 one.

Yeah it's a funny one. I kinda feel like the festival would get over the original reason if there was a place for them to play for the right fee. I think that is the main issue. They probably aren't really pyramid headliners but they would want that kind of money.

They feel like other stage headliners now.

I mean maybe if they continue to stick around and release albums they aren't far off heritage act? They only play 1 or 2 gigs in the UK every few years so they don't oversaturate the market.

Stranger things have happened so for me it's still in the "maybe one day" if there's the right set of circumstances.

So which headliners have followed that had previously only played Brixton Academy (or subbed the Orher Stage) as their biggest gig?I can’t think of any. Which suggests to me that it was a perfectly timed one off that was very successful, and not in any way detrimental to the festival. In fact quite the opposite.

The Stokes are, dare I say it, a touch too unreliable as a live prospect in the current day and age.

Especially for the coin they charge. They can be really great or total sh*t. Judging by the last time I saw them (TRNSMT 2022) both within the same gig.

I'm more taking issue with Master Shake's contention that all hell will break loose in the unprecedented situation of 3 young headliners

(when it happened relatively frequently in the 90s / early 00s and noone batted an eyelid)

nobody gave any f**ks when it was guitar bands. Now youre going into electronic and pop acts getting in there and the core  base is scared shitless yet again that somebody even like Sam Fender will be few and far between of guitar artists being at the top of the bill. I wonder if the old guard  saw the Primavera trio and are sweating bullets that Emily wouldve wanted that herself to make her vision come true despite it likely alienating a lot of folks. Glasto is losing its crutch of "old" acts and they have to adapt one way or another.

Saw the Strokes once, when they co-headlined Leeds/Reading luckily at Leeds where Stokes were on first.  Very average performance looked like they wanted to get though it quickly as they could.  Followed by Pulp who as im sure most of us know are a fantastic live act - wiped the floor with them Jarvis and Julien are different ends of charisma spectrum.   Feel sorry for those at Reading when Stokes came on second.

Big fan of the first three albums but - (IMO) all the strokes albums after than I think have been pretty poor compared.

or they just keep doing what they do? A nice mixture of genres, fresh artists and old guard when possible.

if you really think Emily wanted Chappell/XCX and Sabrina as 2025 pyramid headliners, then you're a little crazy.
