Agree with this. I'm a Sam fan, but People Watching doesn't seem like a departure and it's hard for bands to do three of the same and it keep momentum. The album could be better than the first two but it be lost in a world of same-ness...

A bit like funnily enough...the War on Drugs...

Olivia and Sam could quiet easily go on to be real house hold names and have many hits. I often look back at old festival line ups that at the time just looked good but looking back when those names having got bigger now look amazing.

 

I think a lot of people on efestivals are underestimating just how popular Oliva and Sam are.

 

You could well be right. I'm not overly enamoured with any of the 3 but that doesn't mean they aren't potential megastars.

 

If they all (or 2) turn into megastars then people will look back and say wow, what a coup from Glasto. If this turns out to be around the peak for them though, it'll look bang average. It's part of the reason bookers usually go for someone like Muse or Coldplay, it's low risk.

 

If they go for 3 new headliners after Sza last year... it's very bold.

I guess time will tell, although Sza looked like a weak booking last year as seen by all the NHS give aways of her BST tickets. Although like Glastonbury they must have thought she was a good booking.

He can absolutely belt it. Saw him in Millennium Square in Leeds about nine years ago and he was terrific then. Also very good with Ball on one of their arena tours.

 

Genuinely think he might have the best vocal interpretation of Run I've ever heard.

Despite the metrics pointing positively for SZA, think all three new headliners you'd have this year carry more obvious crossover appeal and clout to a Glastonbury audience. But, again, SZA ultimately walked into a perfect storm of problems in the end, even before the tech issues.

I know Snow Patrol do get a lot of flack, but I remember reading 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die, with Run in there, and I was like "Yep. That absolutely tracks."

 

Probably up there for the best of the post-Britpop ballads that populated the noughties charts, long before Leona Lewis made it an The X Factor-era hit to boot.

 

But Boe absolutely gives it the beans there. The occasion probably helps too.

they have to at one point. This aint your mum's glasto anymore. Its not Sza's fault they did her dirty. And blame Madonna more than anyone. They did the best they could. Artists do say no, this fest isnt invincible and last year really showed that. Theres no deep pockets to pull a miracle.

I know there was chat Stevie was the first cab asked to take Madonna's spot and SZA was the next one - and I get that, given she was in London and the metrics looked excellent, she was a top shout.

 

But if they'd been really chasing a second female headliner, I'd have potentially thrown the book at Olivia Rodrigo. But again, perfect storm for it to come up short for SZA.

They have been lucky Liv’s Manchester dates got postponed. God knows what they’d have done for a female headliner in 2025 if the Guts tour had ended in Sydney last month as planned. Probably just asked Serge from Kasabian to wear a wig.

Rodrigo obviously scheduled enough dates around the rest of this summer to make me think there may always have been loose plans for big shows in Europe, but we'll never know for certain.

 

Had they been able to secure a "large" legacy headliner, maybe they would have given Charli XCX the leg up - or maybe they would have just braced for the blowback over gender parity and gone with three other headliners.

Madonna was never going to play Glastonbury, I am not sure why people keep coming back to that. She has never played festival shows.

A lot of people have never played festival shows and still been nabbed by Glastonbury. U2 had long since ceased doing them by the time they rocked up. The Rolling Stones were basically a non-festival act too.

 

Madonna obviously isn't an artist with an affinity to the British music scene like those, but she also played short sets at Coachella in 2006 and Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2008. Stranger things have happened.

Sure.

But personally I prefer to use an international metric for how good they are. I find it suspicious when is someone is presumably so good (Fender), but yet no one in continental Europe or USA seem to bother. I mean half of the bands playing at Glastonbury could probably also play the Forest National in Brussels or Roseland Theater in Portland.

I'm not judging if they pick him, I just find it weird. All the music I've ever listened was "international", so it is just a phenomena I don't really understand.

Cold Chisel are terrific, but they'd struggle to sell anywhere about a few thousand outside of Australia. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
