Sonisphere lasted 3 years as a regular festival. I loved that festival, but it didn't co-exist, it pretty much started and died.

It was rammed for each of those years and they came back and did a 4th one which sold out. Problem was they had less capacity than Download but were outdoing them with both the headliner quality and the support bill, so they were just breaking even and not making a profit, which for a promoter outside of the big 2 wasn't enough.

 

A Knotfest UK would be done by  live nation which instantly puts them at an advantage over Sonisphere. If Korn and Limp Bizkit can do Gunnersbury Park with a few support bands then I'm sure Slipknot could do MK Bowl with a decent support bill. Remember money isn't just made through ticket sales either, it's food/drink and merch too, and a 1 day Knotfest UK event would do a hell of alot of merch!

Agree with you that LiveNation backing it gives them a leg up and I can definitely see them giving it another go this year, but they will need to come out swinging with the support bill when they announce. I get the impression they are nervous about doing one here after them struggling to sell in 2020 and it was telling that they didn't try to rearrange one for August 2022 when they were in Europe doing Knotfests in Germany and Finland along with festivals and shows across Europe.

 

If they did do one, when do we think a Knotfest in the UK next summer would be?

 

I'm guessing it won't be:

• Rock AM/IM/Mystic weekend
• Download/Nova/Rock 4 People/Greenfield weekend
• Graspop/Hellfest/Copenhell weekend (also has Maiden in Brum and Manchester)
• Resurrection/Tons of Rock/Tulska/Provinssirock/Evil Live weekend (also has Maiden at Olympic Stadium and Live Nation aren't going to want to clash these)

Therefore you are left with the last weekend of May (weekend after Slam Dunk) or the first weekend of July and my guess would be on the later, which would have been the weekend Sonisphere moved to. Not much to clash with UK or European wide either.

When they were planning to do it in 2020, it was scheduled for August. But it's tricky to believe they'd stretch out any Euro tour that long.

 

It's noted they're doing a UK arena tour in December so maybe any announcement will come in the New Year.

It does, but if there was ever a year to do it, it’s 2025. We know they’re around in Europe but not going to be at Download. But I think it depends if they’re still around later in the summer because I don’t see them doing it in June to clash with Download. 
 

I think with the right undercard they’d do fine at the MK Bowl or somewhere similar sized. If they really want to taper it down they could do Gunnersbury park.

I suspect if they did it (which is obvs just speculation at this point) they'd also do a couple other Knotfest's too depending on what other fests they do....maybe an Italy one or a Polish one?

June to first week of July is a normal length of time for a band to do Euro festivals, some do much longer.

In 2020 they had just done Download and hadn't announced any of the support bill. If they announced it this time I'm sure they announce a few big support bands with it. Plus the 25 years first album celebration is a big pull.

At the time the festival market was very different though and Reading was still competing for rock bands.

Sonisphere launched in 2009, following a year where Reading had booked Metallica, RATM, Slipknot, Tenacious D, Avenged, Bullet, QOTSA, Biffy etc.

 

In the 3 years that Sonisphere ran Reading booked Guns N Roses, Blink 182, My Chemical Romance and Muse as headliners.

 

I think there is possibly room for a 2nd festival now that covers the space Reading used to occupy. However, Download seems to be struggling to attract the top bands the last couple of years so maybe not.

I think we need a smaller rock festival similar to the Vein of what Ramblin Man was doing. Somewhere which holds around 25-30,000 people which accommodates to the older demographic and bands which aren't headlining Download.

Scorpions 

Whitesnake 

The Cult 

Halestorm

Steven Wilson 

 

Bands which Download wont book no more or won't ever headline and do it as a 2 day festival so it gives the people who might be put off by download to still do a festival

Definitely nothing but a Green Day ticket for Download. Definitely not the Knotfest day and yes for the LP day if TDG finished before LP.
