Had to take a double look here... I'm guessing that's not the Andy Farley who is one of the greatest pioneering hard house/dance dj's of all time? 🤣

Hehehe, no, it's Andy Farley who worked with On-U Sound, making dub adjacent stuff. Worked with Gary Clail, Keith LeBlanc, Dub Syndicate back in the 90s etc.

I'll be honest, only knew the name vaguely, but when I went in the record shop on Sat morning, Adrian Sherwood was there dropping some stuff off, so off his recommendation/salesmanship I picked up the Andy Farley and Jeb Loy Nichols, both of which were a bit of a punt.

(was going to post up a video but seems they're far and few between)

Caught this on the end of the Deb Grant / Tom Ravenscroft show on 6Music last night.  One of those rare occasions when you get home but have to sit in the car until a song finishes.  Absolutely gorgeous. Album out on Friday.  This is the spiel from Bandcamp: Forgetting You Is Like Breathing Water, the self-titled debut from the duo of trumpeter Will Evans and guitarist, synthesist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Theo Trump

Seconding this, I set myself a goal of listening to 500 newly released albums in 2024 and Friday mornings checking here has become one of my favourite parts of the week

Just checking in to see how this is going?

I did 400 last year and found it a slog, but taken some great habits from that experience into this year and trimmed.

437 now, I didn't start until late March so I am way ahead of target

Once I hit 500 I will slow down and just focus on releases I really want to hear, but I want to take my top 20 or so highest rated and give them all another listen and try and give them a re rate

Beauuuuuuuuutiful. Top 3 so far?

I'm up to around 103 this year with no targets and have found it much more enjoyable than just consuming as much as possible, but last year's gluttony really helped me to hone and expand my taste and make this year so much better and easier.

Do you typically only listen once, and in any situation? As in, just on in the background or not really fully commiting yourself to it, or do you dedicate a time to each of them with earphones?

Also, have many of them become quite a chore to listen all the way through when you've got 3 tracks in and they're shite?

I'm considering setting myself a target from this week to June next year.

Usually once, but a tonne have earned themselves subsequent listens

Always with earphones/headphones but I listen in all kind of situations, a lot of the time it is at work, I definitely don't have the knowledge to rate albums any deeper than just based on how much I enjoy them so I don't feel I need to dedicate quality time to them!

Definitely some have been a chore, occasionally I will finish an album a few songs early if it isn't doing much for me but I always aim to listen to at least 6 songs from it even if I am hating it

Yeah I have really fallen in love with just how much music is out there, you are always one listen away from finding a new favourite and it is just addictive

I have a very loose criteria for rating, it is like 80% just how much I enjoy it and then there is a small factoring in of the quality/ambition of the project too

Prelude to Ecstasy - The Last Dinner Party - my favourite album of the year, fell in love with the band, my most listened to album of the year by a mile, I don't believe it is the best album this year but I just have so much love for it

Midas - Wunderhorse - Cub was a grower on me and Midas was one of my most anticipated albums of the year, I loved the singles and the album itself lived up to my hype too

Where we've been , Where we go from here - Friko - The highest rated by an artist I had never heard of before this year. Big Arcade Fire vibes, just without the ick

I really like the new Nilüfer Yanya album. I've liked everything she's done since her debut. Think she's a really great songwriter with her own unique sound within the indie realm. This album sounds a bit softer and more mature than her first two, it sounds like she's letting the music open up and allow itself to be more simple and direct.

Been listening to a lot of music over the past week or so. Two brilliant but completely batsh*t albums are the new one by Melt-Banana and by Geordie Greep.

The new Melt-Banana is agressive, frantic and they sound a bit like a speed metal band fronted by a Dalek. I love it's raw energy though, for a band that's been around for a while, it's nice how forward-looking it sounds too.

The new Geordie Greep is mad, but funnily enough I actually find it a bit more accessible than his Black Midi stuff. The lyrical themes are a bit clearer, about narcissism, masculinity and the dirtier sides of modern culture. The music is just as experimental, leaning more into the retro jazz sounds this time. I really like it, I feel like the solo direction has resulted in a more purposeful approach to the songwriting + lyrics.

Both excellent recommendations, really enjoyed them. I've started a mini-version of your challenge - want to reach 200 by June.

I've done an instinctive rating system of what I've listened to so far and can't separate those two you recommended (both solid 7.5!).

Gary Clail is back making music and doing some low key gigs after a couple of decades working with ex offenders. Follow him on FB if that’s your thing; he is brilliantly and subversively entertaining. He popped along to the recording of the latest Oranj Son single and twiddled a few knobs…. not his normal sound but they are good mates apparently.

Wasn't what I was expecting at all, but that's pretty good. Thanks for the heads up, definitely a band I'll keep an eye on.
