2024 New Music

The newest GY!BE is their best since Lift Yr Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven. It's got that gigantic, majestic quality that recent albums seemed to lack. I'd say it's probably a bit more accessible too. We all probably know what the title's about, it's good to see a band not staying silent. The fact that the number is vastly lower than what it was in September when the album came out is a message in itself. The imagery that the music evokes is powerful and devastating.

Thoroughly enjoying The Cure's new album this morning! Their 6 Music session was brilliant.

I'm only one listen in but, my god, it's magnificent! It's insane that a band who have been going nearly 50 years can put out an album that stands right up there with their best work - bar 'Disintegration' obviously, which is in my top 5 albums of all time.

Incidentally, BBC 2 have a whole night of programmes dedicated to The Cure tomorrow night - that's my Saturday night sorted!

Enjoying the new Xiu Xiu album! It's catchier and more accessible than some of their recent albums, but it still maintains the experimentation and weirdness. Some really cool sounding songs, really interesting and colourful. Sometimes Xiu Xiu can lean a bit too much towards the nightmarishly weird but on this one they've made that weirdness work.

The new Blood Incantation album is a bit of a masterpiece. It's death metal but with definite Pink Floyd influences and then in the psychedelic and ambient realm too. It's got all the best bits about death metal, that intensity and brutality, but then with some really interesting unconventional song structures and spacey textures. Would definitely recommend for death metal fans who're looking for something a bit different.

Three intimate shows - sans Jimi - announced today. Stoke, Birkenhead and Hebden Bridge I think.

Yes will be interesting to see what they are like without jimi singing live. I'm glad they are giving it a try. I expect they will do a full tour if it goes well.

Would definitely recommend the new Mabe Fratti album if you haven't already. For people who like artists like Sudan Archives or even Kate Bush. It's very unique pop music made from classical instruments, she's a cellist and uses it to create lovely soundscapes and catchy pop songs. I like the mix of jazz, folk and pop the album has. It's quite a weird album, but in a very good way. Maybe they'll put her on West Holts next year? Unlikely but she would fit with the vibe
