2024 New Music

I've been banging on about this elsewhere but I've listened through three times today and I'm loving it.

I've been looking forward to this one for a while.

Bit of a story behind it, Jesse Malin is one of my favourite singer/songwriters, I've seen him countless times and own everything he has put out both solo and in various bands and collaborations.

On top of that, he really does seem to be a great bloke, always raising cash for struggling musicians, involved with the Joe Strummer foundation (Strummerville) etc.

Anyway... a bit ago he was on a night out in a restaurant, suddenly had a stabbing pain in his lower spine and collapsed to the floor. He'd had a spinal stroke and was paralysed from the waste down.

Being American, he can't afford the treatment without fundraisers and this album is part of that. It's a tribute album with many artists covering his songs. The list of contributors is huge and like delving into my record collection.

The Hold Steady, Springsteen, Frank Turner, Butch Walker, Counting Crows... on it goes. I think it shows the high esteem in which he is held amongst his fellow musicians.

That's the end of my history lesson.

TLDR: This is great, give it a listen.

On my third listen of In Waves - Jamie XX and I'd go 7 out of 10 overall I think. It's no In Colour and I would like more of the idontknow, kill dem and it's so good style of tracks in place of that f**king Robyn one, however Treat Each Other Right, Still Summer, Breather, All You Children and Falling Together are stand outs. Looking forward to a nice little bop to those in Manchester tomorrow. Hoping for a nice crowd than that at Glastonbury but have friends for protection in case they're not!

The new Nala Sinephro album is brilliant. Really well produced jazz music, with extra synths that provide a bit of cosmic energy. Love the way the jazz is melded together with the electronica as if it was meant to be together. It's blissful music, really hope that they get her a slot on West Holts next year.

Gave it a listen first thing this morning - one of those bands that should be much more well known than they are. Great live band.

Gotten round to listening to the newest Remi Wolf album, I really like it. Super bright vibrant music, the album's full of bangers, especially the singles Cinderella and Toro, and the bonus track at the end. Can hear disco and funk influences in it too. Surprised at how she's not that big for someone who makes such catchy songs. Takes me back to Friday at woodsies this year.

Lola Young has the same producer for her newest album and I think you'll like her if you are a fan of Remi Wolf, definitely some similarities sonically

The new Jamie xx is great, really well produced. I really like the way he uses samples - I can hear a big Avalanches influence. It sounds like there's more of a 90s house influence too compared to In Colour. Definitely feels a bit harder and more aggressive than the last one, though there are some more tender moments on it too. I really like Life with the Robyn feature, though nothing beats Baddy on the Floor - absolute banger.

New Maribou State. One of mine and my wife’s favourites. Another banger. I wonder if they might be back on the radar for Glastonbury after the health issues Chris David’s experienced.

Liking this. May have to pre-order the vinyl

Gave the album a listen...it's not jumping out at me tbh.  A couple of really strong tracks (Demons, Wallflower) but overall it doesn't feel like they're quite matching up to Forever Whatever. Needs another couple of listens.

I definitely think they're a band that delivers way more live than they do on record.
