The most depressing thing for me is the assumption that the main thing voters care about is how much tax they wil pay. I have never cast a vote in my life based  on whether I will be better or worse off. I'd be bloody delighted to pay more tax if I thought it would lead to better public services.

Well they must get feedback from polling and focus groups that people do care about it

You're not alone @LJS, I seem to remember polling before the election that showed voters were prepared to pay more tax to help public services.

 

Sunak has continued to repeat this attack line from the very first leader debate...and it made no difference then to the polling figures so quite why he thinks it'll make a difference now is anyone's guess. Maybe he likes the sound of it and knows he's got nothing else in his bag.

..it would be nice if they actually made the case for tax rises that are currently needed unless we want more austerity...maybe labour will do that once they get in.

Wouldn't be surprised if see a bit of a poll increase for tories as get closer to the election. By all accounts (twitter) Sunak didn't do too badly last night, Farage popularity slipping as he gets scrutinised more, the realisation that scary socialist Starmer is going to win big...right wing papers and cchq are going to go hell for leather on risks labour and their surrender policies are going to do to the country.

But then I thought that tories would narrow gap the last 5 weeks and hasn't happened...so..

I feel these example of politicians voting against themselves is not malicious. I don’t believe that people are permanently sabotaging campaigns to make money. I suspect it’s more like when I betted for Trump to win the presidency so there is a small consolation if it happens. At the same time probably right clear rules in the future.

It's just kind of silly, unless they're actually trying to lose. The real dodgy stuff are the bets on election date if people had some inside information.

i think you're right its about getting a win when you lose.

thing is with the tax and spend thing...taxes have gone up, as has spending...and everything is still sh*t and needs more money..and there will be cuts unless Labour find more money from somewhere. So.. a politician needs to say look, reality is we are an aging country, yes taxes have gone up but sorry until we can get some growth they're going to have to go up more unless you want more austerity. It is hardly an optimistic election winning message.
