Well when I suffered a racist assault the police ignored and dismissed my attempts to report it. I agree that it should be the police's job, however if asked who I'd trust to protect minorities, I would trust counter-protestors in Bristol over the police.

I mean, they have been found to be institutionally racist in past, and I'm sure some/many are...but with this it isn't so much racism as following orders to protect lives and buildings...and they are trained in this stuff and have dealt with it in the past but also dealt with football violence successfully which this is also similar too.

I have come across some unpleasant police in my time, when I was younger and a bit of a naughty boy...but I've also come across many nice coppers too (but then I'm white so...)

yeah when I was in Manchester the other day there were loads of police surrounding the far right lot and then a load of police for the anti racist lot and a lot of effort just keeping the groups apart.

There is an anti racist demo/march thing in Manchester on Saturday which I don't think is timed to coincide with anything happening from the far right, might go to that (if it isn't raining or there isn't something good on tv or I can't be arsed etc).

I think the police know where all the planned stuff is because of Telegram channels being reported, and Starmer wants to crush any riots before they get going because it isn't a good look if seems out of control so they'll be all over it I reckon...so I'm inclined to agree, let the police deal with it.

It is really easy to get false information out there so the police are in the wrong place or have to split their numbers.

I hope they do know where the protests are and are in the right place but I do worry the organisers are one step ahead and have been feeding them rubbish.

Some accounts such as anonymous do seem to have infiltrated some of this stuff . Not quite sure how it works but I’m presuming that they are giving info back to relevant authorities. Definately the case where rioters are being identified

I mean, one of the things about football violence, is that a large way the police deal with it is to let a certain level of violence happen between the firms out of the way where it doesn't affect most people, while keeping the segregation of everyone else to reduce risks of flash points. Football violence still happens in this country, but because those involved just want to have a fight then go home without involving the police or those outside the firms, it's largely let be now.

In situations like this, one side is spoiling for a fight but doesn't have consenting rivals. The same strategies can't be as easily used.

We know accounts have been infiltrated - so that means the account holders almost certainly know they have been infiltrated. That means they then feed false info whilst using other as yet unknown channels to pass the real info.

It's an age old thing that happens in all conflicts and sadly always will. I sincerely hope the police are in the right places otherwise the news when we wake tomorrow will be dire.

well...football league starts this weekend, and premier league the weekend after that...so maybe they can go back to beating each other up.

First sentences handed down: 3 years, 30 and 20 months. Hopefully this will start to make the thugs think twice about going out.

The one that got 30 months had previous convictions inc a suspended sentence I think - there will be lots like them who could not give a toss about going down.

and a fair few the opposite where they cry in court or shout obscenities to Judges , it will have an impact , tonight might be a bit soon in my opinion to to anything significant .... although protest here amounted to sweet FA although that might be part of a plan of misinformation like you said

Admittedly they may not change their views, but I doubt there will be all that many who are carefree about being sent down, especially as it sounds like the judges will be serving maximum sentences.

Then there will be the statements of people like Drummond, who got 3 years:

Lionel Greig, defending Drummond, said his client had lost his job as a result of his arrest and had told police officers: “I’m absolutely ashamed by the way I’ve acted. I’ve let Southport down, I’ve let the kids down, I’ve let myself down. I’m not here to deny anything.”

Was that before or after he was sentenced?

If it was after then it has some meaning, if before it was just BS to try and get a lesser sentence.

Must be before, as the statement was to police officers. But I can't help but think this is all going to reverberate still. The next week or two will reveal how seriously the rioters take these sentences.

and now for something completely different......

and this could be good if they do it.

Apparently Telegram is doing the right thing while X/Twatter isn't.

Something of a surprise. I know relatively little about Telegram, not least as I've never used it, but I almost always hear it being cited for bad sh*t like crypto scams, porn scams, drug running or indeed this week's violence.
