Placating some voters who are angry with him and wishing they’d gone with Big Nige and co. Was in a pub the other day and the whole family next to me were moaning about Starmer “lying”. Wonder what they made of the past 14 years?

Starmer was saying stuff about training british people so didn't have to rely on immigration before the election, it isn't really new...but with these figures coming out being higher than expected and revised up in past he turned round what was going to be an attack by Badenoch back onto the tories...they are the party of open borders and high immigration.

Problem for Starmer is what happens when immigration stays high during this parliament, which it probably will..because the UK economy needs them...but at same time maybe they could get them back to pre-2020 levels which he could show to voters as progress. Of course Farage will just say net zero immigration, and then someone might have to actually state some hard cold facts.

I mean, it is by design...we had free movement before brexit, then this got switched off at same time as we had a higher demand for certain jobs due to covid (also factor in allowing asylum seekers from Ukraine and Hong Kong to come here).

also...risk for Starmer is he may gain (or not lose) more reform/red wall/traditional working class/horrible zenophobic bigot voters...but will then lose the bleeding heart metropolitan liberal elite remainy voters to lib dems or greens. I guess it's where these votes are that matters, and still sweet spot seems to be to the left on economics and to the right on social policy.
