Going to be all for the SE apparently. Manchester might get a new Old Trafford....

Just seen Andy Burnham trying to justify it. Can't of been easy after his club received numerous points deductions for trying to fund their own stadium.

It's only an extra 240,000 extra flights per year!

Meanwhile, please buy electric cars and don't forget to change your bulbs to LED and turn off the TV when not in use.

I’ve got two twenty something adults still living at home cos there aren’t enough houses. Should we build more do you think so they can get on with having an independent life, family etc?  Or just stop where we are cos we have enough of everything now?

Utd are funding their own stadium

i believe. Much of the wider investment is clearly needed. I am an Everton fan and Steve Rotherham (Kopite) is very bullish about our stadium being a catalyst for regeneration of the area north of the city centre and I suspect this new growth agenda, especially the planning changes, will move that forward. No bitterness from us.

Yeah 100% agree on this, also as an Everton fan. I used to work in Salford Quays and, considering it brings in 70,000 ish people often, and would be more if there were more seats, and tourists every day just to see it, that area is not particularly welcoming. Improving it, making people go around the stadium earlier instead of stick in the city centre on matchdays will surely help the local area (same goes for Everton too). Financially anyway, I wouldn't wish football fans on people's home area personally!!

And inside the stadium...well, it had far more similarities to Goodison Park than I was expecting. Again, stature wise and numbers wise, far from good enough.

From a gig-goer perspective, an alternative to the Etihad or cricket ground in Manchester would be nice...

If the government or council was looking at a building project not tied to a particular football club and regenerating an area, I'm not sure people would be complaining as much about it. Its because they perceive a particular club to be getting unfair treatment, but as they bring in a HUGE percentage of the revenue for the Premier League (and by extension whatever financial benefit football brings to the country, again with a questionable social benefit), and certainly the city of Manchester, then you could argue they deserve that special treatment

In all honesty, United will bring a whole lot more to their area than we will to ours because of the tourists and United (historically and likely in the future again) have European games so even more footfall. Once the novelty wears off we'll just have a football stadium, apart from a couple of gigs in the summer, but its a great excuse to regenerate a really run down area and essentially connect it to the city centre, plus it will encourage more people to go around there earlier when there's no good reason to at the current place (I'm one of them).

all that stuff coming from Reeves could have been from a Tory chancellor, one that is prepared to spend anyway.

The most controversial and divisive bit is the third runway...and I expect it won't happen but we'll see....at moment it's just trying to get the markets to like her and maybe some businesses to invest.

I don’t actually believe there aren’t enough houses, certainly when you look at the number of two or more house owners. Or the number of single or two people living in mansions.

We have more than enough of everything

The government estimates a need for 300 000 new homes per year, there are about 600 000 empty houses and over 2 million second homes

They're either in sh*t places no one wants to live or are just f**ked.

Why you think prices are so high.

Our population grew by about a million in a few years.

It is projected to grow by another 5 million in next 7 years.

Agree about 2nd homes...but not everyone wants to live in St Ives or Lake district.

Well yes, I suppose they could manage their expectations a bit by being prepared to live somewhere they have no connection with cos there are some houses there. They can always see making new support networks of friends and family as an adventure. Or a contribution to clean air.

By the time the third runway actually gets built we'll all be dead from climate catastrophe anyway.

Expand

Apparently it might not be in operation until the 2040s. So, even if climate catastrophe doesn't come that soon, still a way off.

Although if you were going to expand a London area airport, I feel like Gatwick would be the better option. Heathrow just seems to be boxed in by housing estates and motorways that its tricky to know where it would go.

I think you may underestimate the complexity of just going "You're not using it so not yours anymore", as I recall reading here: Why are we building homes when so many are standing empty? - BBC News

They are on about increasing capacity by 10k. And rebuilding the whole area to facilitate it. If a quid of taxpayer dough goes to that sh*t club it’s a f**king travesty.

Isn’t Manchester supposed to be the biggest city in Western Europe without a subway?

What the f**k is that daft shithouse Burnham doing spaffing cash on a washed out club supported exclusively by posh southern twats.

I mean, I said "pretty well". I didn't say it was the single greatest system in the history of ever, plus I suspect if I actually lived in Manchester or the nearby areas, I'd be more aware to flaws and duly get frequently pissed off with it. The Manchester locals Reddit hates it. There's familiarity breeding contempt and whatnot, plus the UK outside London in general isn't great with buses.

As a one-off, seemed to go alright for me. Piccadilly Gardens could be better laid out, but I found where I was going in the end. At the very least it certainly wasn't the f**king horror show that was being stuck in an M4 traffic jam for 2/3 hours while going to Cardiff the week after.

It's definitely good for events, as everyone on it is generally going to the same place for the same reason. Thankfully that's the only time I ever have to use it nowadays.

It's just horrible the rest of the time, generally because of the people and lack of personal space. I used to live in Bury and the tram rides were awful

That Reddit is brilliant, so funny

Also if you really love commutes three times as long as they might if you took an escalator down for 20 seconds and also if you really love your transport being about a million times more prone to delays and cancellations. But yeah other than that it is complete sh*t
