I mean, I said "pretty well". I didn't say it was the single greatest system in the history of ever, plus I suspect if I actually lived in Manchester or the nearby areas, I'd be more aware to flaws and duly get frequently pissed off with it. The Manchester locals Reddit hates it. There's familiarity breeding contempt and whatnot, plus the UK outside London in general isn't great with buses.

As a one-off, seemed to go alright for me. Piccadilly Gardens could be better laid out, but I found where I was going in the end. At the very least it certainly wasn't the f**king horror show that was being stuck in an M4 traffic jam for 2/3 hours while going to Cardiff the week after.

Actually Manchester is pretty good with buses now...well it is round my way...with Burnham's lovely yellow Bee thingies buzzing around. The metrolink is good imo, just needs more lines to go more places. Yes gets busy around commute times, but most of other times you can get a seat...and soon will be able to do same contactless journey thing with both buses and metrolink similar to London. Obviously London underground is amazing etc, but it is always busy in the centre, either with commuters or mostly with f**king tourists going to the f**king theatre.

Well I don't use it for commuting...I use it for fun, and oh what fun...as I look out at the beautiful city in the beautiful weather and thank the lord I'm not in a smelly subway trying not to look at the person opposite.

I was thinking the other day when I was there at night for the first time in a while how much its changed. I first moved there around 15 years ago and the Hilton was the only building of any real height. Now there are so many, with loads more either in progress or on their way, and it actually looks like a big city now. If you look upwards anyway

My feeling is Runway 3 at Heathrow will not happen... It sounds just like HS2, a prestige project for the govt that will end up costing twice what is projected, fall behind schedule and eventually be cancelled by another administration looking to erase the legacy of the previous govt.

The environmental impact notwithstanding (and on a personal level this is the only reason I would need not to proceed with it) I think the demand for air travel will be very different in 15 years, when the runway opens. As oil reserves run down, aviation fuel prices will rise massively, making flying far more expensive. I think a lot of budget tourism will disappear. The need for business travel will reduce as virtual meeting environments become the norm and the amount of cargo flights will drop as they stop being cost-effective, but also as food production evolves.

Are oil reserves expected to start running out in 15 years? if that's the case then we'd definitely better start transitioning asap!

I expect flight prices will need to go up anyway with all the carbon offsetting required to hit net zero targets..unless they're going to lump that on tax payers which seems unfair...or unless they don't include aviation in the net zero targets which is just silly.

It's definitely good for events, as everyone on it is generally going to the same place for the same reason. Thankfully that's the only time I ever have to use it nowadays.

It's just horrible the rest of the time, generally because of the people and lack of personal space. I used to live in Bury and the tram rides were awful

That Reddit is brilliant, so funny

Certainly it helped when I was going to the Old Trafford cricket ground that the tram goes right up to the stadium's door.

It was less fun when leaving and about 50,000 people were all trying to get on it, mind.

I still think Gatwick, Stansted and Luton all seem like better options to expand tbh.

The main thing I have is wondering what's coming my way, given I live between Oxford and Milton Keynes so right in position for this European Silicon Valley experiment they wish to shove through.

Presumably this is why I've seen the nickname Manchattan before.

That will likely be a damp squib...they are throwing some but not loads of money at it in hope that businesses are attracted...but well, for tech companies there are quite a few options out there...

Plus...all this building stuff...who is going to do it?

Gosh...at same time what is Findoutnow doing differently?...they have consistently had Reform polling better than anyone else...across most polls Labour still has a slight lead. They doing something with Don't Knows?

I've read a theory some of these polling companies are more internet based and the internet is the domain of younger people.

Maybe there are "hidden" boomers sticking with the Tories but they look done with gen z. Patel can't of helped today:

Well I'm aware these ideas have been discussed before - the last government floated ideas of a motorway from Oxford to Cambridge but shelved it due to lack of a lack of support from cost-benefit analyses and local opposition.

The only tangible ideas I've heard so far are improving the single carriageway road from Bedford to Cambridge and finishing the re-opening of the Oxford-Cambridge rail line. Both measures that I suspect would have more local support than plonking another Milton Keynes-size new town in there, as has been suggested by some.
